<東方三博士の礼拝>図像における異邦人表現

Abstract

現在，自然科学の分野においては，可視的な身体的特徴にもとづく人間の分類に大きな疑問が投げかけられている。いっぽうで，一般社会においては，とりわけ肌の色の違いをもとにした「白色・黄色・黒色」の三分類がひとつの典型的な人種カテゴライズの方法として根強く定着している。本小論では，視覚的伝統における人種の三区分の一つの例として，<東方三博士の礼拝〉の図像をとりあげる。〈東方三博士の礼拝〉は，西洋美術の中で最も数多く絵画や彫刻に制作され，親しまれている図像のひとつであるが，造形美術において「肌の色による人間の三分類」が典型的にあらわれる例でもある。その背景には「異邦人を含む全人類を包括する普遍的宗教としてのユダヤ=キリスト教」の思想が存在し，とくに肌の色の描き分けによって三人の博土が人類の三つの民族を表すという美術上の表現は十四世紀から十五世紀にかけてまず北ヨーロッパにおいて，ついでイタリアや他の国々で定着する。とくに十五世紀には三人の中の一人が黒人主として描かれる例が増えはじめ，西洋社会において一般にネガティブな価値を与えられてきた「黒い肌」が<東方三博士>においては<高貴な異邦人>の象徴となっている点は興味深い。ここから近代的「人種」概念以前の時代の異邦人表現としての<東方三博士の礼拝>図像の特徴を考える。

Although the colour black and black skin have been given negative connotations in the European tradition, the black prince in the Adoration of The Three Magi is symbolized as a noble Gentile, If the race conception is seen as essentially modern, the Adoration of The Three Magi then represents the expression of the various world races in the pre- modern era.
