日本近世における噂の力

Abstract

延享2年(1745), 三田藩において上級家臣の親子が永暇の刑に処された。理由は父親の女性問題の噂が三田藩領内を超えて世間に流布したためである。しかし噂はウソであった。なぜ, ウソの噂であったにもかかわらず親子は処分されたのか。それは父親の日常態度に不満を持っていた人民が噂に共鳴し, この噂が「天の口」(神の声)へと昇華したからである。そして人民が求めたものは真相の解明ではなく, 上級家臣が厳罰に処されて, 人民の前に惨めな姿をさらけ出すことであった。本稿は, この事件を素材に, 噂が「天の口」へと昇華する過程について考察する。

In 1745 (the 2 nd year of Enkyo), a father and his son from a high-ranking feudal family in Sanda domain were sentenced to nagaitoma. This is because a rumor of the father's extramarital affair spread across and beyond the Sanda domain, and eventually reached the outside world. In fact, however, this rumor proved to be false. Why were the father and son punished even though the rumor was false?
