インド、アルナチャル・プラデシュ州のモンパ民族地域における住民にとっての「山」のもつ意味

Abstract

インドのアルナチャル・プラデシュ州のモンパ民族地域において, 住民にとって「山」がどのような存在となっているのかを調査した. その結果, 山は, モンパ民族地域において次の3つの役割を果たしていることが判明した. 1.山は民族分布や文化, 社会の境界をつくっている. アルナチャルヒマラヤ(アッサムヒマラヤ)の山脈が流通の障害物の役割を果たし, タワンモンパとディランモンパでそれぞれ独自の言語や生活習慣が発達し, 両者の境界をつくっている. また, 山は1962年の中国軍のモンパ地域への侵攻以来, インド軍が大規模に駐留して, 自然の要塞の役割を果たしている. 2.モンパ民族が古くから信仰するボン(ポン)教の宗教的儀礼, 祭式において, 山が神として信仰の対象になっている. 各地域はそれぞれ周辺に山の神が存在し, その神に祈り, 捧げ物をする儀式, 祭りが行われている. 捧げ物は少女や家畜であり, それぞれの山の神に捧げるものが決まっている. ディランモンパ地域のディランゾン地区やテンバン地区では, 社会的階層としての上位クランと下位クランに分かれており, このような伝統的儀礼にはそのクラン(氏族)の差が明瞭に見て取れる. 3.山はモンパ民族にとって資源として重要であり, 住民は山の森林から材を得てきた. ディラン地方では森林は3つに区分され, それぞれの使用目的も異なる. しかし, 近年大量伐採によって森林破壊が顕著になり, そのため, 商業伐採が禁じられたが, 今でも違法伐採が続いている. 住民たちもそのような森林の過度の伐採に危機感を感じるようになってきたため, 伐採に代わるような現金獲得手段を考え, 森林保護を進める動きが出てきた.

The role of the "Mountain" for Monpa people has been surveyed in Arunachal Puradesh, India. As a result, mountains serve three kinds of roles for the Monpa people. 1.The mountain delineates the border of tribes, cultures, and societies. Arunachar Himalaya (Assam Himalaya) has played the role of obstacle for interaction between Tawang Monpa and Dirang Monpa, and each unique language, culture, and society has developed independently. The mountain also plays the role of natural fort, because the Indian Army has been stationed on a large scale there since the Chinese Army attacked Arunachal Puradesh in 1962. 2.The Monpa people traditionally follow the Bon religion in addition to Tibetan Buddhism. In Bon religion, mountains have been worshipped as mountain gods for ages. Mountain gods are particular to each area and local people pray and give ritual offerings to their mountain gods in ceremonies. The ritual offering each time consists of livestock and/or young girl. The difference between high clans and low clans is observed in this ceremony. 3.The mountain is important for the Monpa people as a natural resource, as they harvest timber from the mountain. The forest has been classified into three categories and the purpose for use is different in each forest. Deforestation is recently accelerated by large-scale logging practices. Although commercial cutting was prohibited by the central government, illegal cutting continues even now. As local people developed a sense of crisis, a movement to preserve the forests arose with new ideas, including cultivating eco-tourism.
