The Herero people of Namibia are known as the 'victims' of German colonial genocide. After World War I, the long dress worn by Herero women̶derived from the German settlers' clothing̶became an 'ethnic attire' and important factor in their ethnic/gender identity formation and self-representation. The long dress has been examined in anthropological and historical studies, which have studied how the Herero people constructed a new society and collective identity by adopting the styles of their 'enemies'. However, wearing the long dress is not only an expression of identity but also a performance technique. This study explores the allure of the long dress, which has induced Herero women to continue wearing it in modern times. In this study based on what I observed in my fieldwork, I highlight the multiple aspects of the long dress, which are formed through contact with German settlers, cattle, individual Herero women and Himba women. Further, I describe how Herero women have acquired different performances corresponding to these different aspects. In conclusion, I argue that wearing the long dress is not merely an act of cultural reproduction that expresses their belonging to and respect for their ancestors and chiefs at ceremonial sites, such as annual commemorations; it is also a challenge undertaken for pursuing increasingly beautiful movements, materials and designs that reflect current trends. Wearing the long dress embodies the Herero people's modern sense of being connected to the world. The aesthetic aspect of draping the long dress has become sophisticated owing to their daily training; consequently, the Herero people have also inherited the historical aspect and colonial experiences. |
