抄録: Xuanhedian, the palace founded during the reign of the Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty, is famous as the emperor's treasure house. The catalogues of its tresures include the Xuanhe Bogu Tu 宣和博古図, the Xuanhe ShuPu 宣和書譜, and the Xuanhe HuaPu 宣和畫譜. Besides as a treasure house, Xuanhedian was also a library. In addition, there was a special room for Liu AnFei 劉安妃, who won the favor of the Emperor at that time. It seemes that Xuanhedian had been Huizong's favorite place, and indeed he did spend most of his daily life there. Because of the Emperor, the political position of Xuanhedian became very important. The Imperial Edicts from the Emperor Himself 御筆手詔, which played important roles in the reign of the Emperor Huizong, were issued at East Hall 東廊 of Xuanhedian. Those who engaged in issuing the edicts were eunuchs, with the title of Zhi Xuanhedian 直宣和殿 or Zhi Baohedian 直保和殿, and lower-ranking military officials, with the title of Ruisidian Wenzi Waiku 睿思殿文字外庫. They all connected to the Xuanhedian in certain way. The position of Xuanhedian Xueshi 宣和殿学士 was founded in 1115, and at that time Cai You 蔡攸, a son of Cai Jing 蔡京, was appointed as Xuanhedian Xueshi. those as Xuanhedian Xueshi had no particular jobs, but were allowed to enter the Forbidden Palace 禁中 and accompany the Emperor. For many years Cai You was the only one who owned this position, so I believe the position of Xuanhedian Xueshi was originally established for him. Cai You had enjoyed Huizong's favor before Huizong's enthronment. Modern scholarship haven't paid too much attention to him, as they regarded him only as Cai Jing's son. Yet since Cai You's relationship with Huizong was closer than Cai Jing, I assume that Cai Jing's power was possibly established upon the relationship between Huizong and Cai You. That's because Cai Jing as Prime Minister could not enter the Forbidden Palace and participate in issuing the Imperial Edicts from the Emperor Himself, but Cai You as Xuanhedian Xueshi could. Cai You was one of the most influential officials in the last decade of the Northern Song. When we study the political history during Huizong's reign, we have to pay more attention to the political role of Xuanhedian as well as of Cai You.
