Abstract: We describe a structure of model for shortterm swing dynamics of multi-machine power grids, exhibiting an instability phenomenon termed the Coherent Swing Stability (CSI). This model is based on the swing equations with a linear term representing the interconnection between synchronous machines in a power grid. We analyze the New England 39-bus test system exhibiting CSI and show that the phenomenon happens in the dynamical system with one nonlinear mode that is weak relative to many linear oscillatory modes.
