3-log10-unit underestimation of spiked poliovirus. Over 60% of the organics contained in the two solutions were recovered in the concentrate, while over 60% of the organics in the uninhibited solution were lost during the concentration process. River water concentrates also caused inhibition of RT-qPCR. Organic concentrations in the river water samples increased by 2.3 to 3.9 times after the virus concentration procedure. The inhibitory samples contained organic fractions in the 10- to 100-kDa size range, which are suspected to be RT-PCR inhibitors. According to excitation-emission matrices, humic acid-like and protein-like fractions were also recovered from river water concentrates, but these fractions did not seem to affect virus detection. Our findings reveal that detailed organic analyses are effective in characterizing inhibitory substances.

%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/174100
%V 229
%X This study proposes an efficient exact algorithm for the precedence-constrained single-machine scheduling problem to minimize total job completion cost where machine idle time is forbidden. The proposed algorithm is based on the SSDP (Successive Sublimation Dynamic Programming) method and is an extension of the authors’ previous algorithms for the problem without precedence constraints. In this method, a lower bound is computed by solving a Lagrangian relaxation of the original problem via dynamic programming and then it is improved successively by adding constraints to the relaxation until the gap between the lower and upper bounds vanishes. Numerical experiments will show that the algorithm can solve all instances with up to 50 jobs of the precedence-constrained total weighted tardiness and total weighted earliness–tardiness problems, and most instances with 100 jobs of the former problem.

%T Topoisomerase II, scaffold component, promotes chromatin compaction in vitro in a linker-histone H1-dependent manner
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/49170
%V 35
%X TopoisomeraseII (Topo II) is a major component of chromosomal scaffolds and essential for mitotic chromosome condensation, but the mechanism of this action remains unknown. Here, we used an in vitro chromatin reconstitution system in combination with atomic force and fluorescence microscopic analyses to determine how Topo II affects chromosomal structure. Topo II bound to bare DNA and clamped the two DNA strands together, even in the absence of ATP. In addition, Topo II promoted chromatin compaction in a manner dependent on histone H1 but independent of ATP. Histone H1-induced 30-nm chromatin fibers were converted into a large complex by Topo II. Fluorescence microscopic analysis of the Brownian motion of chromatin stained with 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole showed that the reconstituted chromatin became larger following the addition of Topo II in the presence but not the absence of histone H1. Based on these findings, we propose that chromatin packing is triggered by histone H1-dependent, Topo II-mediated clamping of DNA strands.

%X The indigenous communities of Botswana discussed in this paper are generally referred to as the Khoisan (Khoesan). While there are debates on the common origins of Khoisan communities, the existence of at least fi ve language families suggests a separate evolution that resulted in major grammatical and lexical differences between them. Due to historical confl icts with neighboring groups, they have been pushed far into the most inhospitable areas of the regions where they presently live. The most signifi cant victimization of Khoisan groups by the linguistic majority has been the systematic neglect of their languages and cultures. In fact, social and development programs have attempted to assimilate them into so-called majority ethnic groups and into modernity, and their languages have been diffi cult to conserve in contact situations. This paper provides an overview of these indigenous communities of Botswana and contributes to ongoing research of the region. I discuss reasons for the communities' vulnerability by examining their demography, current localities, and language vitality. I also analyze some adverse effects of development and the danger the Khoisan face due to negative social and political attitudes, and formulate critical areas of intervention for the preservation of these indigenous languages.

%X The universal sl2 invariant is an invariant of bottom tangles from which one can recover the colored Jones polynomial of links. We are interested in the relationship between topological properties of bottom tangles and algebraic properties of the universal sl2 invariant. A bottom tangle T is called Brunnian if every proper subtangle of T is trivial. In this paper, we prove that the universal sl2 invariant of n-component Brunnian bottom tangles takes values in a small subalgebra of the n-fold completed tensor power of the quantized enveloping algebra Uh(sl2). As an application, we give a divisibility property of the colored Jones polynomial of Brunnian links.

%T Target molecules of food phytochemicals: food science bound for the next dimension.
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/172222
%V 3
%X Phytochemicals are generally defined as secondary metabolites in plants that play crucial roles in their adaptation to a variety of environmental stressors. There is a great body of compelling evidence showing that these metabolites have pronounced potentials for regulating and modulating human health and disease onset, as shown by both experimental and epidemiological approaches. Concurrently, enormous efforts have been made to elucidate the mechanism of actions underlying their biological and physiological functions. For example, the pioneering work of Tachibana et al. uncovered the receptor for (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg) as the 67 kDa laminin receptor, which was shown to partially mediate the functions of EGCg, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-proliferative activities. Thereafter, several protein kinases were identified as binding proteins of flavonoids, including myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol. Isothiocyanates, sulfur-containing phytochemicals present in cruciferous plants, are well known to target Keap1 for activating the transcription factor Nrf2 for inducing self-defensive and anti-oxidative gene expression. In addition, we recently identified CD36 as a cell surface receptor for ursolic acid, a triterpenoid ubiquitously occurring in plants. Importantly, the above mentioned target proteins are indispensable for phytochemicals to exhibit, at least in part, their bioactivities. Nevertheless, it is reasonable to assume that some of the activities and potential toxicities of metabolites are exerted via their interactions with unidentified, off-target proteins. This notion may be supported by the fact that even rationally designed drugs occasionally display off-target effects and induce unexpected outcomes, including toxicity. Here we update the current status and future directions of research related to target molecules of food phytochemicals.

%X The project Development of Area Informatics: With Emphasis on Southeast Asia (FY2005-09)[Shibayama 2005: 1] aims to create a new discipline called "area informatics," an approach that integrates the interdisciplinary field of informatics with area studies, which encompasses all academic disciplines, including natural ecology, environmental studies, human ecology, sociology, history, cultural studies, economics and political science. One of the core research topics of this project is the process of urban formation in Hanoi in the 19th and 20th centuries. This research aims to explain the history of urban development in Hanoi, which has been the capital of Vietnam for 1,000 years, and to digitize the research process and its results for publication. To explain the process of Hanoi's urban development and transformation based on the hypothesis "Through the continual filling in of lakes and ponds formed by the riverbed of the old Red River, Hanoi achieved significant urban development and transformation during the Nguyen Dynasty period" generated by Sakurai [Sakurai and Shibayama 2007: 37], research into this process was furthered through spatial analyses of various data gathered during the project, including maps, satellite images, cadastral maps and historic ruins and vestiges, carried out using GIS(Geographical Information Systems) and RS (Remote Sensing) technologies. This paper discusses the analyses of urban transformation in the 19th and 20th centuries with the main emphasis on the urbanized city, water areas, and pre-colonial villages.

%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/108378

%X In this paper, national identity is conceptualized in terms of competing representations of the putative "nation" based on which socio-political contests unfold and bureaucracy functions. Two key historical happenings marked the politics of national identity in West Malaysia: the 1969 racial riots and the Islamization policies. After 1969, comprehensive ethnic-based preferential policies were formalized, while Malay political primacy justified on the basis of indigeneity became entrenched. The Islamization Policy implemented from the 1980s mainstreamed the idea of Malaysia as a negara Islam. Executive curtailment of judicial autonomy led to institutional mutations dubbed by a scholar as the "silent re-writing of the Constitution." During the 1990s, despite selected socio-cultural measures of "liberalization" more accommodative of non-Malay interests, ethnic preferential treatments remained prevalent. Moreover, the conflation of the logic of Malay primacy with that of Islamic supremacy in institutional practices resulted in a rise in inter-religious contentions. Historic regime change became conceivable following recent political development. Nonetheless, prospects for radical revision of existing inter-religious dynamics remain dim because Islamic conservatism among Malay politicians transcends party-lines.

%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/182037
%V 5
%X Sigma factor is a subunit of plastid-encoded RNA polymerase that regulates the transcription of plastid-encoded genes by recognizing a set of promoters. Sigma factors have increased in copy number and have diversified during the evolution of land plants, but details of this process remain unknown. Liverworts represent the basal group of embryophytes and are expected to retain the ancestral features of land plants. In liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha L.), we isolated and characterized a T-DNA-tagged mutant (Mpsig1) of sigma factor 1 (MpSIG1). The mutant did not show any visible phenotypes, implying that MpSIG1 function is redundant with that of other sigma factors. However, quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and RNA gel blot analysis revealed that genes related to photosynthesis were downregulated, resulting in the minor reduction of some protein complexes. The transcript levels of genes clustered in the petL, psaA, psbB, psbK, and psbE operons of liverwort were lower than those in the wild type, a result similar to that in the SIG1 defective mutant in rice (Oryza sativa). Overexpression analysis revealed primitive functional divergence between the SIG1 and SIG2 proteins in bryophytes, whereas these proteins still retain functional redundancy. We also discovered that the predominant sigma factor for ndhF mRNA expression has been diversified in liverwort, Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), and rice. Our study shows the ancestral function of SIG1 and the process of functional partitioning (subfunctionalization) of sigma factors during the evolution of land plants.

%T Effect of pulse current on structure and adhesion of apatite electrochemically deposited onto titanium substrates
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/84652
%V 23
%X Apatite films were deposited onto titanium (Ti) metal substrates by an electrodeposition method under a pulse current. Metastable calcium phosphate solution was used as the electrolyte. The ion concentration of the solution was 1.5 times that of human body fluid, but the solution did not contain magnesium ions at 36.5 °C. We used an average current density of 0.01 A/cm2 and current-on time (TON) equal to current-off time (TOFF) of 10 ms, 100 ms, 1 s, and 15 s. The adhesive strength between apatite and Ti substrates were relatively high at TON = TOFF = 10 ms. It is considered that small calcium phosphate (C–P) crystals with low crystallinity were deposited on the Ti surface without reacting with other C–P crystals, H2O, and HCO3- in the surrounding environment. This resulted in relaxation of the lattice mismatch and enhancement of the adhesive strength between the apatite crystals and Ti substrates.

%X We report the observation of optical polarization switching in InxGa1−xN/GaN quantum well active layers, using semipolar {11[overline 2]2} planes. When the In composition is less than ~30%, the emissions related to the top and second valence bands are polarized along the [1[overline 1]00] and perpendicular [[overline 1][overline 1]23] directions, respectively, similar to earlier studies. On the contrary, as the In composition increases above 30%, the polarizations switch, indicating a crossover between the two valence bands. Because the polarization degree is less sensitive to the well width, the observed polarization switch is ascribed to the InN deformation potentials.

%T Transient dynamics in electric power system with dc transmission: Fractal growth in stability boundary
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/49152
%V 152
%X The paper is concerned with transient dynamics and stability of an electric power system with DC transmission. Nowadays, DC transmission systems are widely applied to conventional electric power systems. However, the transient dynamics of AC/DC power systems, affected by the active power that flows into DC transmissions, is not entirely understood. The paper derives a non-symmetrical swing equation system to analyse the transient dynamics of an AC/DC power system. The non-symmetry implies a unidirectional component of an external forcing that corresponds to both DC power and exciting power swing. The paper discusses a stability boundary and its qualitative change in the non-symmetrical swing equation system. An understanding of the stability boundary gives an important clue to the transient dynamics of AC/DC power systems. Fractal structure growth in the stability boundary caused by the change of DC power flow is described. The existence of a fractal boundary implies that the system behaviour becomes chaotic and unpredictable, depending on the operation of the DC transmission.

%T Dissociation of DNA–polycation complexes by polyanions and polyampholytes
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/49628
%V 446
%X Both polyanions and polyampholytes cause the dissociation of DNA–polycation complexes in experiments. To elucidate their mechanisms, Monte Carlo simulations have been conducted on a simple model, with DNA modeled as an infinite charged cylinder and other polyions treated as charged Shish–Kebab rods. Our results show that a highly charged polyanion is required to separate a polycation from a DNA. However, for a diblocked polyampholyte, its net dipole induces a higher probability to bridge a DNA and a polycation. Thus, the loosening mechanisms are found to be markedly different between polyanions and polyampholytes.

%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/49159

%X Direct attack to genomic DNA by reactive oxygen species causes various types of lesions, including base modi. cations and strand breaks. The most significant lesion is considered to be an unrepaired double-strand break that can lead to fatal cell damage. We directly observed double-strand breaks of DNA in reconstituted chromatin stained by a fluorescent cyanine dye, YOYO (quinolinium, 1,1 '-[1,3-propanediylbis[(dimethyliminio)-3,1- propanediyl]]bis[4-[(3-methyl-2(3H)-benzoxazolylidene) methyl]]-, tetraiodide), in solution, where YOYO is known to have the ability to photo-cleave DNAs by generating reactive oxygen species. Reconstituted chromatin was assembled from large circular DNA (106 kbp) with core histone proteins. We also investigated the effect of vitamin C ( ascorbic acid) on preventing photo-induced double-strand breaks in a quantitative manner. We found that DNA is protected against double-strand breaks by the addition of ascorbic acid, and this protective effect is dose dependent. The effective kinetic constant of the breakage reaction in the presence of 5 mM ascorbic acid is 20 times lower than that in the absence of ascorbic acid. This protective effect of ascorbic acid in reconstituted chromatin is discussed in relation to the highly compacted polynucleosomal structure. The results highlight the fact that single-molecule observation is a useful tool for studying double-strand breaks in giant DNA and chromatin.

%T When Effort Rimes with Advantageous Selection: A New Approach to Life Insurance Pricing
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/65610
%V 75
%X This paper investigates the demand for and pricing of life insurance when insureds' risk aversion is correlated with their precautionary effort. We assume that the population is divided into two groups: (i) very risk-averse individuals who have a low probability of death (PoD) because of the precautionary effort they undertake and (ii) less risk-averse individuals who undertake less effort and thus have a higher PoD. After computing the pooling equilibrium price under perfect competition for a class of CRRA utility and bequest functions, we compute the level of demand for life insurance by the two groups. Under the assumption of negative correlation between risk aversion and risk exposure, lower-risk individuals still buy insurance even if the price offered is higher than the fair price corresponding to their group. This is because low risks are assumed to be more risk averse, valuing insurance so highly that they can tolerate higher than fair prices. We also present some cases when low-risk individuals purchase more than their high-risk neighbors even though they realize they are subsidizing the high risks. In such cases, the insurers gain the advantage of facing a PoD which is smaller than the rate they normally expect. This fact contradicts the so-called adverse selection hypothesis.

%X Despite the different languages, and cultures in Africa, there is commonality in religious artistic and musical traditions. Did the native Africans sold into slavery retain any of the traditions in the "New World" in general and in the United States of America in particular? There is considerable retention in the Latin American countries, because the slaves had many more rights in South America than in the United States. Consequently, the African slaves in the United States of America gradually lost contact with his past. However, there are certain church rituals and some aspects of the black American music which have been identified as cultural carry-overs in the United States.

%T Surface potential measurements by the dissipative force modulation method
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/39810
%V 75
%X In this study, we propose a novel surface property measurement technique using noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM), which is referred to as the “dissipative force modulation (DM) method.” NC-AFM-based surface property measurements have mostly utilized conservative tip-sample interaction forces, which induce a frequency shift of cantilever resonance without dissipating cantilever vibration energy. In the DM method, local surface properties are measured by detecting a modulated dissipative tip–sample interaction force which dissipates cantilever vibration energy and hence induces an amplitude variation in cantilever vibration. Since the force sensitivity to dissipative interactions obtained in a typical NC-AFM setup is much higher than that to conservative ones, the DM method can improve the sensitivities of conventional NC-AFM-based techniques that utilize conservative interactions. Combining this method with Kelvin-probe force microscopy, we present the first quantitative surface potentialmeasurement through dissipative tip–sample interactions.

%X We perform reachability computation for an analysis of continuous and hybrid models for transient stability of the Single Machine-Infinite Bus (SMIB) system. Analysis algorithms developed in this paper are based on the iterative computation of reach-able sets for continuous and hybrid systems. They ac-curately estimate stability regions of the models and thereby can evaluate transient stability of the SMIB system with switching operations.

%X The movements of 10 radionuclides in the water-saturated soil were studied. Clay loam or sand obtained from reactor sites, and Toyoura standard quartz sand were used as a soil sample. Breakthrough curves and sorption distributions of radionuclides along soil columns were observed under various conditions such as pH, coexisted ions and the kinds of teaching solution. The results obtained are as follows : (1) the divalent ions such as 54Mn, 85Sr, 60Co and 65Zn were not adsorbed so intensively, and high mobilities were observed, (2) the radionuclides of 137Cs and 144Ce were extremely adsorbed on soil surface, and their mobilities were not so high as to the divalent ions described above, (3) the radionuclides of io6Ru, 95Zr, 95Nb and iiomAg were retained largely in the soils, but some parts of their radionuclide moved as easy as to the divalent ions in soil water system.

%X Linoleic acid isomerase in Lactobacillus plantarum was found to be a novel multi-component enzyme system widespread in membrane and soluble fractions. The isomerization reaction involved a hydration step, 10-hydroxy-12-octadecenoic acid production from linoleic acid, as part of the reaction, and the hydration reaction was catalyzed by the membrane fraction. Both membrane and soluble fractions were required for the whole isomerization reaction, i.e., conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) production from linoleic acid, and for CLA production from 10-hydroxy-12-octadecenoic acid, a reaction intermediate. The multi-component enzyme system was inhibited by o-phenanthroline, and divalent metal ions such as Ni^[2+] and Co^[2+] restored activity. Metal oxides such as VO4^[3+], MoO4^[2+], and MnO4^[2+] enhanced activity. The multi-component enzyme systems required oxidoreduction cofactors such as NADH together with FAD or NADPH for total activity

%X Despite extensive investigations, the distribution of hydrogen around a stress singularity field is still not well understood. In this study, we conducted molecular statics (MS) analyses of the hydrogen-trap energy around a {112}<111> edge dislocation in alpha iron. The distribution of hydrogen in crystals is generally assumed to be dominated by hydrostatic stress. However, the MS results indicate that the hydrogen-trap energy is sensitive to shear stress as well as hydrostatic stress, thus indicating that strong trap sites are distributed across a wide range on the slip plane around the dislocation core. We also performed molecular dynamics simulation of hydrogen diffusion, and revealed the anisotropic diffusion behaviour of hydrogen around the dislocation core.

%X We consider a model of non-local gravity with a large bare cosmological constant, Λ, and study its cosmological solutions. The model is characterized by a function f(ψ) = f0e[αψ], where ψ = □[-1]R and α is a real dimensionless parameter. In the absence of matter, we find an expanding universe solution a ∝ t[n] with n < 1, that is, a universe with decelerated expansion without any fine-tuning of the parameter. Thus the effect of the cosmological constant is effectively shielded in this solution. It has been known that solutions in non-local gravity often suffer from the existence of ghost modes. In the present case, we find the solution is ghost-free if α > α[cr] ≈ 0.17. This is quite a weak condition. We argue that the solution is stable against the inclusion of matter fields. Thus our solution opens up new possibilities for solution to the cosmological constant problem.

%X The coordination circumstances and redox reactions of UO2[2+] in the aqueous solution concentrated by calcium chloride, such as CaCl2·6H2O (6.9 M CaCl2), were studied by Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. The frequency of the O=U=O symmetrical stretching vibration suggested that the complex formation of UO2[2+] with Cl[−] leads to the weakening of U=O bond. In the electrochemical measurements, two-step cathodic currents were observed at −0.090 and −0.4 V (vs. Ag|AgCl) corresponding to the reduction of UO2[2+] to UO2[+] and that of UO2[+] to UO2, respectively. It was found that UO2[+] formed at first cathodic current was disproportionated to form UO2[2+] and UO2. The UO2 was identified by X-ray diffraction analysis. Electrolytic deposition of UO2 was observed in 6.9–4.7 M CaCl2 and in 14 M LiCl. When small amount of proton, i.e., 0.005 M was coexisted in 6.9 M CaCl2, UO2[2+] was reduced to form U[4+] instead of UO2.

%T Concept Software Based on Kinect for Assessing Dual-Task Ability of Elderly People
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/160130
%V 1
%X [Objective]: Assessment of fall risk of elderly people is a critical issue. Dual-task (DT) ability is a criterion for risk assessment. We developed new concept software based on Microsoft (Redmond, WA) Kinect™ for assessing DT ability. The software is named “Dual-Task Tai Chi” (DTTC) and includes Tai Chi and number place (Sudoku) components. The purpose of this study is to validate the DTTC test for assessment of DT ability. [Subjects and Methods]: Forty-five community-dwelling elderly (mean age, 74.1±6.6 years) individuals participated in this study. They performed DTTC, locomotive, cognitive, and DT tests. DT ability was evaluated with a 10-m walk under a cognitive-task condition and a 10-m walk under a manual-task condition. The correlation between the time taken to complete the DTTC test and each function test was determined using Pearson correlation coefficients. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationship between the DTTC test results and results of the other tests. [Results]: The time taken to complete the DTTC test was correlated with DT ability, locomotive functioning, and cognitive functioning. Results of stepwise multiple regression analysis confirmed that DT, balance, and cognitive ability are statistically significant. No statistically significant association was found for the other variables. [Conclusions]: The DTTC test quantitatively evaluates a compound function including DT, balance, and cognitive abilities.

%X Performance of the Knudsen pump is studied numerically to find out effective configurations not only for the finally achieved separation and compression rates, but also for its time efficiency. A system of convection–diffusion equations with transmission conditions, which have been derived from the Boltzmann equation under the narrow channel approximation, is used for simulations of various configurations. A comparison with the experiment of evacuation from a tank is also made to demonstrate the practical ability of that system.

%X The sensitivity (limit of detection) of high-resolution Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (HRBS) is mainly determined by the background noise of the spectrometer. There are two major origins of the background noise in HRBS, one is the stray ions scattered from the inner wall of the vacuum chamber of the spectrometer and the other is the dark noise of the microchannel plate (MCP) detector which is commonly used as a focal plane detector of the spectrometer in HRBS. In order to reject the stray ions, several barriers are installed inside the spectrometer and a thin Mylar foil is mounted in front of the detector. The dark noise of the MCP detector is rejected by the coincidence measurement with the secondary electrons emitted from the Mylar foil upon the ion passage. After these improvements, the background noise is reduced by a factor of 200 at a maximum. The detection limit can be improved down to 10 ppm for As in Si at a measurement time of 1 h under ideal conditions.

%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/129641

%X Ab initio density-functional theory calculations within the local density approximation were conducted to elucidate whether critical thickness for ferroelectricity intrinsically exists in free-standing polydomain PbTiO3 ultrathin films, where there was no screening effect of electrodes. The ferroelectric polydomain state was found to be energetically favorable over the paraelectric state even in the thinnest film one unit-cell thick, indicating no intrinsic critical thickness existed. The ferroelectric distortions in the film were stabilized by the formation of ferromagneticlike closure domains, because the surface charge, which caused a depolarizing field, was sufficiently screened by the in-plane aligned polarization at the surface. Further analysis of the covalent Pb-O bonding structure, which plays a central role in determining ferroelectricity in PbTiO3, revealed that the closure domain structure consists of the 180° as well as 90° domain walls.

%X We retrospectively analyzed early postoperative complications in 293 consecutive patients withbladder cancer who underwent radical cystectomy with urinary diversion from 1990 to 2007 at the Department of Urology of the Sapporo Medical University School of Medicine. The Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (ver 3.0) was used to evaluate complications that occurred within 30 days after surgery, and grade 3 and higher grades according to the criteria were defined as complications in this study. The guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were used for the classification of surgical site infection. Early postoperative complications were found in 158 cases (54%). Acute pyelonephritis (APN), which was related to the removal of the ureteral catheter, was the most frequent complication, found in 96 (33%), followed by surgical site infection in 39 (13%), and ileus in 33 (11%). When transient APN was excluded, the rate for complications was 30%. Possible life-threatening complications were experienced in 15 patients (5%) including 2 (0.7%) who eventually died of the complications. The preoperative grade 3 score of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA score) was significantly related to development of early postoperative complications in univariate analysis. In multivariate analysis, a grade 3 ASA score and the estimated blood loss were independent factors to predict development of early complications. Postoperative nasogastric tubing was not related to ileus after surgery, suggesting that postoperative indwelling of the tube is not routinely needed. Although about half of the patients experienced early postoperative complications, they were usually transient and manageable. Thus, careful evaluation of the preoperative ASA score and a reduction in the amount of bleeding during surgery may lower the development of early postoperative complications.

%X Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GTP, E.C. 2.3.2.1) has been considered to be a member of γ-glutamyl cycle and playa physiological role in the transport of amino acids across cell membrane through this cycle. This enzyme was extracted from cancerous tissue obtained from 10 patients with renal cell carcinoma. These enzyme preparations were investigated electrophoretic ally and enzymologically in comparison with the enzyme of normal renal tissue, normal liver tissue and fetal renal tissue. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Five cancerous tissues had a novel γ-GTP which was electrophoretic ally different from that of normal kidney, fetal kidney or normal liver. Other properties of the novel γ-GTP were almost the same as that of normal kidney except molecular weight. 2) Molecular weight of the novel γ-GTP was about 130,000, while that of normal kidney was approximately 90,000. 3) With regard to the possible relationship between the histopathological findings of the renal cell carcinoma and the presence of the novel γ-GTP, it was revealed that the novel enzyme was detected more frequently in poorly differentiated renal cell carcinoma or in the tumor composed mainly of granular cells. Further investigation is necessary to establish the clinical significance of the novel γ-GTP, but at least it is suggested that this enzyme might be a biochemical marker of poorly differentiated renal cell carcinoma.

%X Copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc) monolayers and cobalt-phthalocyanine monolayers deposited on Au(111) surfaces were investigated by frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM). Submolecular-resolution topographic images were successfully obtained for both samples. Despite the similar molecular geometry of the two molecules, they showed clearly different contrasts in the topographic images. The origin of the contrast is discussed in terms of the relationship of the molecular orbitals and the chemical interaction between the tip and the molecules. In addition, a molecular-resolution surface potential (SP) image was obtained on CuPc monolayers using Kelvin probe force microscopy (KFM) utilizing FM-AFM. The molecular-scale SP contrast was explained by the electric dipole moment at the organic/metal interface. This result suggested the possibility of the detection of the single molecular dipole moment by KFM.

%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/39710

%X Copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc) thin films on MoS2surfaces were investigated by noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM). Submolecular resolution was successfully obtained in both topographic and dissipation images of CuPc monolayers. For topographic contrasts, the influence of short-range chemical interactions is particularly considered while the dissipation contrasts are discussed in relation to the tip-induced molecular fluctuations. Molecularly-resolved NC-AFM image was also obtained on CuPc multilayer, which revealed the structural difference between the monolayer and multilayersurfaces. The energy dissipation measured on these surfaces showed distinctive difference reflecting the different structural stabilities in the films. Furthermore, local surface modification of CuPc monolayer was demonstrated by NC-AFM. This is a direct evidence for the existence of energy transfer from the vibrating cantilever to the molecules through dissipative tip–sample interactions.

%X Electrical breakdown of short (∼50nm) multiwalled carbon nanotubes(MWNTs) is studied utilizing mechanically controllable break junction technique with goldelectrodes. Measurements of the conductance-biascharacteristics near the breakdown point revealed two different types of breakdown behavior for the short MWNTs. In one type designated as type I, the conductance increases nearly linearly with the bias and, over the breakdown point, decreases stepwise. On the other hand, in the type-II breakdown, the conductance shows a transient and irreversible increase right before the breakdown and subsequently jumps to zero. We consider that the type-II breakdown in vacuum is contact related, whereas the type-I breakdown occurs through the usual MWNT heating

%X The discovery of deterministic chaos in the late nineteenth century, its subsequent study, and the development of mathematical and computational methods for its analysis have substantially influenced the sciences. Chaos is, however, only one phenomenon in the larger area of dynamical systems theory. This Focus Issue collects 13 papers, from authors and research groups representing the mathematical, physical, and biological sciences, that were presented at a symposium held at Kyoto University from November 28 to December 2, 2011. The symposium, sponsored by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, was called 50 Years of Chaos: Applied and Theoretical. Following some historical remarks to provide a background for the last 50 years, and for chaos, this Introduction surveys the papers and identifies some common themes that appear in them and in the theory of dynamical systems.

Reduction of the gallole with lithium metal afforded the corresponding gallole dianion species as a lithium salt. Structures of the gallole and the lithium salt of the gallole dianion have been elucidated by using X-ray crystallographic analysis, NMR spectroscopies, and density functional theory calculations

%X Photoelectronic responses of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite CH[3]NH[3]PbI[3] on mesoporous TiO[2] electrodes are investigated. On the basis of near-band-edge optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra, the bandgap energy and exciton binding energy as a function of temperature are obtained. The exciton binding energy is much smaller than thermal energy at room temperature, which means that most excitons are thermally dissociated, and optical processes are determined by the photoexcited electrons and holes. We determined the temperature dependence of exciton binding energy, which changes from ~30 meV at 13 K to 6 meV at 300 K. In addition, the bandgap energy and the exciton binding energy show abrupt changes at 150 K due to structural phase transition. Our fundamental optical studies provide essential information for improving the device performance of solar cells based on halide perovskite semiconductors.

%X Physical parameters characterizing electrokinetic transport in a confined electrolyte solution are reconstructed from the generic transport coefficients obtained within the classical nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamic framework. The electro-osmotic flow, the diffusio-osmotic flow, the osmotic current, as well as the pressure-driven Poiseuille-type flow, the electric conduction, and the ion diffusion are described by this set of transport coefficients. The reconstruction is demonstrated for an aqueous NaCl solution between two parallel charged surfaces with a nanoscale gap, by using the molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. A Green-Kubo approach is employed to evaluate the transport coefficients in the linear-response regime, and the fluxes induced by the pressure, electric, and chemical potential fields are compared with the results of nonequilibrium MD simulations. Using this numerical scheme, the influence of the salt concentration on the transport coefficients is investigated. Anomalous reversal of diffusio-osmotic current, as well as that of electro-osmotic flow, is observed at high surface charge densities and high added-salt concentrations.

%X Interlayer tunneling spectra, the Josephson critical current density J_{c}, and the normal tunneling resistance have been measured simultaneously for intrinsic Josephson junctions of Bi_{1.9}Pb_{0.1}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} (BiPb2212) in the underdoped region using a small mesa structure (S=1×1 μm2) and a short-pulse technique. J_{c} was significantly enhanced when Bi was partially replaced with Pb. By comparing Jc with the value estimated by the Ambegaokar-Baratoff formula, it was found that superfluid density doubles in the Pb-containing sample. In addition, Pb raises the superconducting coherence peak without changing the value of the superconducting gap Δ. Based on a model that accounts for the inhomogeneity of Δ in k space, we argue that the superfluid density increases because Pb substitution increases the homogeneity of Δ(k).

%X Porphyran (POR) from the red alga Porphyra yezoensis is a water soluble dietary fiber. In this study, we investigated the effect of dietary POR on glucose metabolism in KK-Ay mice (a model for type 2 diabetes). Mice were divided into 4 groups and fed a diet containing 5% cellulose (control), POR, POR Arg or POR K. After 3 wk of feeding, plasma insulin levels and the calculated homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index were significantly lower in the POR group than in the control group. Compared with the control group, plasma adiponectin levels were significantly increased in the POR, POR Arg and POR K groups. These results suggest that dietary POR should improve glucose metabolism in diabetes via up-regulation of adiponectin levels. In addition, the amount of propionic acid in the cecum of the POR group was significantly higher than in the control group and the profile of bacterial flora was changed by dietary POR. In the cecum of the POR, POR Arg and POR K groups, Bacteroides was significantly increased and Clostridium coccoides was significantly decreased compared with in the control group. The effects of dietary POR on the hindgut environment might contribute to the improvement of glucose metabolism.

%X The application of DNA-based hybrid catalysts for enantioselective synthesis has recently emerged. These catalysts, self-assembled from DNA and a metal complex with a specific ligand through supramolecular or covalent anchoring strategies, have demonstrated high enantioselectivity in a variety of carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reactions and have expanded their role in asymmetric catalysis. In this review, we summarize the advent and significant progress of DNA-based asymmetric catalysis and discuss remaining challenges in using DNA as a chiral scaffold. We hope that this review will inspire many of today’s active scientists in asymmetric catalysis.

%X A functionality for regulating hole transport efficiency is a prerequisite for the utilization of DNA duplexes as nanodevices. Herein, we report the regulation of hole transport in anthraquinone-tethered DNA with dual triplex forming sites. Long-range photooxidation experiments showed that hole transport was effectively suppressed by the formation of triplex at low temperature, while it was recovered by dissociation to the duplex at higher temperature. Variation of temperature induced the formation and dissociation of the third strand at each triplex region individually, leading to the stepwise regulation of hole transport in DNA.

%T _{3}^{-}, Cl−, ClO_{4}^{-}, and SO_{4}^{2-}) and dissolved oxygen (DO) on the hydrolysis behavior of Zn2+ and the growth regime of ZnO were studied using sodium and zinc salt solutions bubbled with O2, air, or Ar gas. The interaction of the counteranions with H+ and Pd as well as Zn2+ was suggested as an important factor for the chemical ZnO deposition, and it was found that only NO_{3}^{-} can raise the pH of a DMAB solution without DO, affording the continuous ZnO growth. Dissolved oxygen accelerated the ZnO nucleation process on the Pd and had less influence comparable to NO_{3}^{-} on the subsequent growth on the ZnO surface. The ZnO films deposited from Zn(NO3)2–DMAB solutions bubbled with O2, air, or Ar gas were characterized with an X-ray diffractometer, field emission scanning electron microscope, UV-visible spectrophotometer, and Hall coefficient analyzer. The Ar-bubbled solution gave superior ZnO films in terms of crystallinity, growth orientation, surface morphology, and electrical conductivity due to the relatively moderate crystal nucleation compared to in the presence of DO.

%X The orbital energy of molecule is significantly shifted upon going from gas phase to solution phase. Based on Koopmans' theorem, the shift should be related to the change of ionization potential. However, the computed shift looks usually random and clear understanding has not been attained yet. Furthermore it is obtained only after solving complicated equations. In this study, we report a systematic framework for understanding the orbital energy shift by solvation effect and simple approximate formulae are presented.

%X Selenocysteine lyase (SCL) catalyzes the decomposition of L-selenocysteine to yield L-alanine and selenium by acting exclusively on l-selenocysteine. The X-ray structural analysis of rat SCL has demonstrated how SCL discriminates L-selenocysteine from L-cysteine on the molecular basis. SCL has been proposed to function in the recycling of the micronutrient selenium from degraded selenoproteins containing selenocysteine residues, but the role of SCL in selenium metabolism in vivo remains unclear. We here demonstrate that the 75Se-labeling efficiency of selenoproteins with 75Se-labeled selenoprotein P (Sepp1) as a selenium source was decreased in HeLa cells transfected with SCL siRNA as compared to the cells transfected with control siRNA. Immunocytochemical analyses showed high SCL expression in kidney and liver cells, where selenocysteine is recovered from selenoproteins. Mature testes of mice exhibited a specific staining pattern of SCL in spermatids that actively produce selenoproteins. However, SCL was weakly expressed in Sertoli cells, which receive Sepp1 and supply selenium to germ cells. These demonstrate that SCL occurs in the cells requiring selenoproteins, probably to recycle selenium derived from selenoproteins such as Sepp1.

%X The individuality of production devices should be taken into account when soft-sensors are designed for parallelized devices. Since it is expressed as differences of the correlation among measured variables, it is useful to cluster samples on the basis of the correlation among variables for adopting a multi-model approach. In addition, changes in process characteristics can be coped with in the same way. In the present work, a new clustering method, referred to as NC-spectral clustering, is proposed by integrating the nearest correlation (NC) method and spectral clustering. Spectral clustering is a graph partitioning method that can be used for sample classification when an affinity matrix of a weighted graph is given. The NC method can detect samples that are similar to the query from the viewpoint of the correlation without a teacher signal. In the proposed method, the NC method is used for constructing the weighted graph that expresses the correlation-based similarities between samples and the constructed graph is partitioned by using spectral clustering. In addition, a new soft-sensor design method is proposed on the basis of the proposed NC-spectral clustering. The usefulness of the proposed methods is demonstrated through a numerical example and a case study of parallelized batch processes. The performance of the proposed correlation-based method is better than that of the conventional distance-based methods.

%T Reduction of frequency noise and frequency shift by phase shifting elements in frequency modulation atomic force microscopy.
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/141310
%V 82
%X We recently reported the analysis of the frequency noise in the frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM) both in high-Q and low-Q environments [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 80, 043708 (2009)]. We showed in the paper that the oscillator noise, the frequency fluctuation of the oscillator, becomes prominent in the modulation frequency lower than f(0)∕2Q, where f(0) and Q are the resonance frequency and Q-factor. The magnitude of the oscillator noise is determined by the slope of the phase versus frequency curve of the cantilever at f(0). However, in actual FM-AFM in liquids, the phase versus frequency curve may not be always ideal because of the existence of various phase shifting elements (PSEs). For example, the spurious resonance peaks caused by the acoustic excitation and a band-pass filter in the self-oscillation loop increase the slope of the phase versus frequency curve. Due to those PSEs, the effective Q-factor is often increased from the intrinsic Q-factor of the cantilever. In this article, the frequency noise in the FM-AFM system with the PSEs in the self-oscillation loop is analyzed to show that the oscillator noise is reduced by the increase of the effective Q-factor. It is also shown that the oscillation frequency deviates from the resonance frequency due to the increase of the effective Q-factor, thereby causing the reduction in the frequency shift signal with the same factor. Therefore the increase of the effective Q-factor does not affect the signal-to-noise ratio in the frequency shift measurement, but it does affect the quantitativeness of the measured force in the FM-AFM. Furthermore, the reduction of the frequency noise and frequency shift by the increase of the effective Q-factor were confirmed by the experiments.

%T Relay Ability Estimation and Topology Control Using Multidimensional Context Parameters for Mobile P2P Multicast
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/138531
%V 2011
%X We focus on mobile P2P multicast, in which mobile end nodes not only act as receivers but also relay the received stream forward to others. In mobile P2P multicast, negative effects caused by the change of available bandwidth and the disconnection of mobile nodes are propagated to the downstream nodes. To solve this problem, we developed a novel node-allocation framework using the multidimensional context parameters of each mobile node, which include available bandwidth, disconnection rate, and the remaining battery capacity. Considering the significance of each parameter, our method integrates these parameters into a single parameter called relay ability. Taking the relay ability into account, each node is allocated to the multicast topology to minimize the negative effects mentioned above. To test our method, we applied our framework to conventional P2P multicast topology and show the results from comparative evaluations through computer simulation.

%T H∞ optimal approximation for causal spline interpolation
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/128834

%X In this paper, we give a causal solution to the problem of spline interpolation using H∞ optimal approximation. Generally speaking, spline interpolation requires filtering the whole sampled data, the past and the future, to reconstruct the inter-sample values. This leads to non-causality of the filter, and this becomes a critical issue for real-time applications. Our objective here is to derive a causal system which approximates spline interpolation by H∞ optimization for the filter. The advantage of H∞ optimization is that it can address uncertainty in the input signals to be interpolated in design, and hence the optimized system has robustness property against signal uncertainty. We give a closed-form solution to the H∞ optimization in the case of the cubic splines. For higher-order splines, the optimal filter can be effectively solved by a numerical computation. We also show that the optimal FIR (finite impulse response) filter can be designed by an LMI (linear matrix inequality), which can also be effectively solved numerically. A design example is presented to illustrate the result.

%X Clinical studies were done on 14 patients who had undergone urinary diversion by ureterosigmoidostomy during the past 63 months since Our Hospital started its medical service. The primary diseases were bladder tumor in 12 patients, renal pelvic tumor combined with bladder tumor in 1 patient and paraurethral tumor in 1 patient. All patients underwent radical cystectomy. Ureterosigmoid anastomosis was performed in 15 ureters with Sampson's technique, in 9 ureters with Leadbetter's combined technique and in 1 ureter with Nesbit's technique. The incidence of postoperative pyelonephritis was infrequent in patients who had undergone ureterosigmoidostomy with Leadbetter's combined technique. Immediate postoperative increase in the level of serum BUN was seen in some patients, whereas gradual increase in the level of serum BUN was seen in more patients between 6 and 12 months after operation. Postoperative level of serum Cr was stable. Hyponatremic and hypokalemic tendencies were seen until 6 months after operation. Hypochloremic tendency was seen in the immediate postoperative period, whereas hyperchloremia was frequently seen after 6 months postoperatively. Although a hypocalcemic tendency was seen in approximately one half of the patients in the immediate postoperative period, it later returned to the normal range. Fluctuation of serum P level was similar to that of serum Ca level, but there was transient hypophosphatemia in some patients even after 6 months postoperatively. The level of serum Mg tended to elevate after operation. Hypomagnesemia, however, was seen in I patient who had shown psychiatric disturbances. Sodium bicarbonate ranging in dosages from 2 to 9 g was prescribed for 5 patients who were hyperchloremic. Four of the 14 patients are dead. Recurrence of the tumor as the cause of death was seen in only 1 patient. Of the 10 patients who are alive, 7 are being followed up regularly at our outpatient clinic. Except for occasional development of pyelonephritis in some patients, all 7 are free of serious postoperative complications and are enjoying daily life without external urinary devices.

%X Porous Coordination Polymers (PCPs) composed of transition metal ions and bridging organic ligands have been extensively studied. The characteristic features of PCPs are highly regular channel structures, controllable channel sizes approximating molecular dimensions, designable surface potentials and functionality, and flexible frameworks responsive to guest molecules. Owing to these advantages, successful applications of PCPs range from molecular storage and separation to heterogeneous catalysts. In particular, use of their regulated and tunable nanochannels in the field of polymerization has allowed multi-level control of polymerization via control of stereoregularlity, molecular weight, etc. In this chapter, we focus on recent progress in polymerization utilizing the nanochannels of PCPs, and demonstrate why this polymerization system is attractive and promising from the viewpoint of precision control of polymeric structures.

%X Thaumatin, an intensely sweet-tasting plant protein, elicits a sweet taste at a concentration of 50 nM. The crystal structure of a recombinant form of thaumatin I produced in the yeast Pichia pastoris has been determined to a resolution of 1.1 Å. The model was refined with anisotropic B parameters and riding H atoms. A comparison of the diffraction data and refinement statistics for recombinant thaumatin I with those for plant thaumatin I revealed no significant differences in the diffraction data. The R values for recombinant thaumatin I and plant thaumatin I (F(o) > 4σ) were 9.11% and 9.91%, respectively, indicating the final model to be of good quality. Notably, the electron-density maps around Asn46 and Ser63, which differ between thaumatin variants, were significantly improved. Furthermore, a number of H atoms became visible in an OMIT map and could be assigned. The high-quality structure of recombinant thaumatin with H atoms should provide details about sweetness determinants in thaumatin and provide valuable insights into the mechanism of its interaction with taste receptors.

%T Evaluation of [125I]IPOS as a molecular imaging probe for hypoxia-inducible factor-1-active regions in a tumor: comparison among single-photon emission computed tomography/X-ray computed tomography imaging, autoradiography, and immunohistochemistry.
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/197213
%V 102
%X To image hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1)-active tumors, we previously developed a chimeric protein probe ([(123/125) I]IPOS) that is degraded in the same manner as HIF-1α under normoxic conditions. In the present study, we aim to show that the accumulation of radioiodinated POS reflects the expression of HIF-1. In vivo single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/X-ray CT (CT) imaging, autoradiography, and double-fluorescent immunostaining for HIF-1α and pimonidazole (PIMO) were carried out 24 h after the injection of [(125) I]IPOS. Tumor metabolite analysis was also carried out. A tumor was clearly visualized by multi-pinhole, high-resolution SPECT/CT imaging with [(125) I]IPOS. The obtained images were in accordance with the corresponding autoradiograms and with the results of ex vivo biodistribution. A metabolite analysis revealed that 77% of the radioactivity was eluted in the macromolecular fraction, suggesting that the radioactivity mainly existed as [(125) I]IPOS in the tumors. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the HIF-1α-positive areas and PIMO-positive areas were not always identical, only some of the regions were positive for both markers. The areas showing [(125) I]IPOS accumulation were positively and significantly correlated with the HIF-1α-positive areas (R = 0.75, P < 0.0001). The correlation coefficient between [(125) I]IPOS-accumulated areas and HIF-1α-positive areas was significantly greater than that between the [(125) I]IPOS-accumulated areas and the PIMO-positive areas (P < 0.01). These findings indicate that [(125) I]IPOS accumulation reflects HIF-1 expression. Thus, [(123/125) I]IPOS can serve as a useful probe for the molecular imaging of HIF-1-active tumors.

%T Ab initio calculation of electron effective masses in solid pentacene

%V 98
%X We have calculated the band structures of solid pentacene. One of our models makes use of experimental data obtained for a single crystal [R. B. Campbell et al., Acta. Crystallogr.14, 705 (1961); R. B. Campbell and J. M. Robertson, Acta. Crystallogr.15, 289 (1962)] and the other one considers a thin film fabricated by the present authors. Our calculations indicate that the electronic properties of a pentacene thin film are markedly different from those of a single crystal, although the densities of pentacene molecules in these solids are not significantly different. The energy band gaps of the single crystal and the thin film have been estimated to be 0.73eV and between 0.26 and 0.72eV, respectively. The bandwidths of the highest valence band and the lowest conduction band of the film are wider than those of the single crystal. These results suggest that the electron or hole carriers in the film have effective masses lighter than those of the single crystal, and in order to estimate the carrier mobility we first calculate the effective mass.

%X This study demonstrates how the radon-222 ({222}Rn) concentration of soil gas at an active fault is sensitive to cumulative recent seismicity by examining seven active faults in western Japan. The {222}Rn concentration was found to correlate well with the total earthquake energy within a 100-km radius of each fault. This phenomenon can probably be ascribed to the increase of pore pressure around the source depth of {222}Rn in shallow soil caused by frequently induced strain. This increase in pore pressure can enhance the ascent velocity of {222}Rn carrier gas as governed by Darcy's law. Anomalous {222}Rn concentrations are likely to originate from high gas velocities, rather than increased accumulations of parent nuclides. The high velocities also can yield unusual young gas under the radioactive nonequilibrium condition of short elapsed time since {222}Rn generation. The results suggest that ongoing seismicity in the vicinity of an active fault can cause accumulation of strain in shallow fault soils. Therefore, the {222}Rn concentration is a possible gauge for the degree of strain accumulation.

%T A modified repulsive bridge correction to accurate evaluation of solvation free energy in integral equation theory for molecular liquids
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/187988
%V 137
%X Integral equation theory for molecular liquids is one of the powerful frameworks to evaluate solvation free energy (SFE). Different from molecular simulation methods, the theory computes SFE in an analytical manner. In particular, the correction method proposed by Kovalenko and Hirata [Chem. Phys. Lett.290, 237 (Year: 1998);Kovalenko and Hirata J. Chem. Phys.113, 2793 (Year: 2000)]10.1063/1.1305885 is quite efficient in the accurate evaluation of SFE. However, the application has been limited to aqueous solution systems. In the present study, an improved method is proposed that is applicable to a wide range of solution systems. The SFE of a variety of solute molecules in chloroform and benzene solvents is evaluated. A key is the adequate treatment of excluded volume in SFE calculation. By utilizing the information of chemical bonds in the solvent molecule, the accurate computation of SFE is achieved.

%T Lattice mismatch and crystallographic tilt induced by high-dose ion-implantation into 4H-SiC
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/187960
%V 111
%X Lattice parameters of high-dose ion-implanted 4H-SiC were investigated with reciprocal space mapping (RSM). N, P, Al, or (C+Si) ions were implanted into lightly doped epilayers to form a (330–520) nm-deep box profile with concentrations of 10[19]−10[20]atoms/cm[3]. After activation annealing at 1800 °C, RSM measurements were conducted. The RSM images for (0008) reflection revealed that high-dose ion implantation causes c-lattice expansion in implanted layers, irrespective of ion species. In addition, crystallographic tilt was observed after high-dose ion implantation. The tilt direction is the same for all the samples investigated; the c-axis of the implanted layers is inclined toward the ascending direction of the off-cut. The c-lattice mismatch and the tilt angle increased as the implantation dose increases, indicating that the implantation damage is responsible for the lattice parameter change. From these results and transmission electron microscopy observation, the authors conclude that the c-lattice mismatch and the crystallographic tilt are mainly caused by secondary defects formed after the ion-implantation and activation-annealing process.

%X The Japanese Society of Steel Construction (JSSC) had organised a special task committee and conducted a study on the recent development of maintenance, renewal and retrofitting for buildings and bridges of Japan. This paper describes the outline of the study by the working group of bridges and consists of two parts. The first part is concerned with the survey on the recent developments of technologies for the longevity of bridges, whereas the second part is specifically concerned with the structural health monitoring technologies. In view of the fact that important terminologies such as lifetime and service life differ considerably throughout the world, some fundamental terminologies are reviewed, discussed and redefined in this paper on a unified viewpoint. Furthermore, recent developments on the structural health monitoring technology are also reviewed and the results are summarised in a matrix form.

%X A good prognosis can be expected for most, but not all, cases of thyroid papillary cancer. Numerous molecular studies have demonstrated beneficial treatment and prognostic factors in various molecular markers. Whereas most previous reports have focused on genomics and proteomics, few have focused on lipidomics. With the advent of mass spectrometry (MS), it has become possible to identify many types of molecules, and this analytical tool has become critical in the field of omics. Recently, imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) was developed. After a simple pretreatment process, IMS can be used to examine tissue sections on glass slides with location information. Here, we conducted an IMS analysis of seven cases of thyroid papillary cancer by comparison of cancerous with normal tissues, focusing on the distribution of phospholipids. We identified that phosphatidylcholine (16:0/18:1) and (16:0/18:2) and sphingomyelin (d18:0/16:1) are significantly higher in thyroid papillary cancer than in normal thyroid tissue as determined by tandem mass (MS/MS) analysis. These distributional differences may be associated with the biological behavior of thyroid papillary cancer.

%T An Error Correction Scheme through Time Redundancy for Enhancing Persistent Soft-Error Tolerance of CGRAs
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/198743

%X Time redundancy is sometimes an only option for enhancing circuit reliability when the circuit area is severely restricted. In this paper, a time-redundant error-correction scheme, which is particularly suitable for coarse-grained reconfigurable arrays (CGRAs), is proposed. It judges the correctness of the executions by comparing the results of two identical runs. Once a mismatch is found, the second run is terminated immediately to start the third run, under the assumption that the errors tend to persist in many applications, for selecting the correct result in the three runs. The circuit area and reliability of the proposed method is compared with a straightforward implementation of time-redundancy and a selective triple modular redundancy (TMR). A case study on a CGRA revealed that the area of the proposed method is 1% larger than that of the implementation for the selective TMR. The study also shows the proposed scheme is up to 2.6x more reliable than the full-TMR when the persistent error is predominant.

%X The effect of (1)H decoupling in magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR is studied under radiofrequency irradiation causing simultaneous nutations around a pair of orthogonal axes. Double-nutation with an arbitrary pair of nutation frequencies is implemented through modulation of the amplitude, phase, and frequency of the transmitting pulses. Similarity and difference of double-nutation decoupling and two-pulse phase-modulation decoupling schemes [A. E. Bennett, C. M. Rienstra, M. Auger, K. V. Lakshmi, and R. G. Griffin, J. Chem. The structure of recoupling bands caused by interference of the (1)H spin nutation with sample spinning is studied by both experiments and numerical simulations.

%X The spatial and temporal slip distribution of the Tecomán, Colima, Mexico earthquake is estimated from near-source strong-motion and teleseismic body-wave data. To perform a stable inversion, we applied smoothing constraints and determined their optimal relative weights on the observed data using an optimized Akaike's Bayesian information criterion (ABIC). The source parameters are as follows: (strike, dip, slip) = (300°, 20°, 93°), seismic moment M0 = 2.3 × 10[20] N m; source duration = 30 sec; along-strike distance = 35 km; along-dip distance = 70 km. We found that the rupture process can be divided into three stages: the rupture nucleated near the hypocenter (stage I), then it broke the first asperity centering about 15 km southwest from the epicenter (stage II); and the rupture propagated to the northeast and the second asperity was broken (stage III). We also estimated the shear-stress change due to the rupture process of the mainshock on and around the major fault zone. It appears that one cluster of aftershocks for the first 5 days, which took place in and adjacent to the zones of stress, increased due to the fault rupture during the mainshock, but overall correlation between the aftershock location and the stress pattern is not clear.

%X Several attempts have been made recently to infer the dynamic rupture processes of moderate-size earthquakes from kinematic waveform inversion and dynamic crack inversion. These studies have revealed a quite heterogeneous distribution of dynamic stress drop and relative fault strength over the fault for most earthquakes. In two strike-slip California earthquakes, negative stress drop has been identified in a shallow section of the fault, suggesting the possible existence of a zone of velocity-strengthening frictions. The dynamic models yielded quite short rise times comparable to those inferred from kinematic modelling of observed waveforms. The short slip durations for these earthquakes may probably be attributed to shorter length scale of fault segmentation due to the heterogeneities of shear stress and fault strength.

%X Dynamic behavior of the segmented-in-series tubular solid oxide fuel cell upon discharge was investigated. The cell performance decreased initially at 900℃, accompanied by the increase of ohmic resistance. Lower partial pressure of oxygen in the cathode resulted in a more severe decrease, whereas the gas displacement in the anode compartment did not induce such behavior. As the current was cut off, the ohmic resistance rapidly recovered toward the starting value before current load. The possible origin for this increase-recovery behavior of the ohmic resistance has been discussed based on the evaluation of oxygen partial pressure at the cathode/electrolyte interface and element interdiffusion between cathode and electrolyte.

%X [Objective] 5′-adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key molecule of metabolic enhancement in skeletal muscle. We investigated whether metformin (MET) acts directly on skeletal muscle, is transported into skeletal muscle via organic cation transporters (OCTs), and activates AMPK. [Materials/Methods] Isolated rat epitrochlearis and soleus muscles were incubated in vitro either in the absence or in the presence of MET. The activation status of AMPK, the intracellular energy status, and glucose and MET transport activity were then evaluated. The effect of cimetidine, which is an OCT inhibitor, on AMPK activation was also examined. [Results] MET (10 mmol/L, ≥ 60 min) increased the phosphorylation of Thr172 at the catalytic α subunit of AMPK in both muscles. AMPK activity assays showed that both AMPKα1 and AMPKα2 activity increased significantly. The AMPK activation was associated with energy deprivation, which was estimated from the ATP, phosphocreatine (PCr), and glycogen content, and with increased rates of 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (3MG) transport. MET did not change the basal phosphorylation status of insulin receptor signaling molecules. MET was transported into the cytoplasm in a time-dependent manner, and cimetidine suppressed MET-induced AMPK phosphorylation and 3MG transport. [Conclusion] These results suggest that MET is acutely transported into skeletal muscle by OCTs, and stimulates AMPKα1 and α2 activity in both fast- and slow-twitch muscle types, at least in part by reducing the energy state.

%X We investigate the impact of symbol rate control, modulation level control, and the number of hops on the area spectral efficiency of interference-limited multihop radio networks. By controlling symbol rate and modulation level, data rate can be adapted according to received power. In addition, varying the number of hops can control received power. First, we evaluate the achievable end-to-end throughput of multihop transmission assuming symbol rate and modulation level control. Numerical results reveal that by controlling symbol rate or using multihop transmission, the end-to-end communication range can be extended at the cost of end-to-end throughput, and this may result in lower area spectral efficiency. Next, an expression for the area spectral efficiency of multihop radio networks is derived as a function of the number of hops and the end-to-end throughput. Numerical results also reveal that the resulting area spectral efficiency depends on the specific circumstances, which, however, can be increased only by using multihop transmission.

%X Reliable detection of other radio systems is crucial for systems that share the same frequency band. In wireless communication channels, there is uncertainty in the received signal level due to multipath fading and shadowing. Cooperative sensing techniques in which radio stations share their sensing information can improve the detection probability of other systems. In this paper, a new cooperative sensing scheme that reduces the false detection probability while maintaining the outage probability of other systems is investigated. In the proposed system, sensing information is collected using multi-hop transmission from all sensing stations that detect other systems, and transmission decisions are based on the received sensing information. The proposed system also controls the transmit power based on the received CINRs from the sensing stations. Simulation results reveal that the proposed system can reduce the outage probability of other systems, or improve its link success probability.

%X We discuss the division of radio resources in the time and frequency domains for wireless local area network (WLAN) devices powered with microwave energy. In general, there are two ways to avoid microwave power transmission (MPT) from influencing data communications: adjacent channel operation of continuous MPT and WLAN data transmission and co-channel operation of intermittent MPT and WLAN data transmission. Experimental results reveal that, even when we implement these methods, several problems arise because WLAN devices have been developed without supposing the existence of MPT. One problem clarified in our experiment is that adjacent channel operation at 2.4GHz does not necessarily perform well owing to the interference from MPT. This interference occurs regardless of the frequency separation at 2.4GHz. The other problem is that intermittent MPT could result in throughput degradation owing to the data rate control algorithm and the association scheme of the WLAN. In addition, the experimental results imply that a microwave energy source and a WLAN device should share information on the timings of intermittent MPT and data transmission to avoid buffer overflow.

%T Improvement of High-Resolution Satellite Rainfall Product for Typhoon Morakot (2009) over Taiwan
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/193042
%V 14
%X The authors improve the high-resolution Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) product for Typhoon Morakot (2009) over Taiwan by using an orographic/nonorographic rainfall classification scheme. For the estimation of the orographically forced upward motion used in the orographic/nonorographic rainfall classification scheme, the optimal horizontal length scale for averaging the elevation data is examined and found to be about 50 km. It is inferred that as the air ascends en masse on the horizontal scale, it becomes unstable and convection develops. The orographic/nonorographic rainfall classification scheme is extended to the GSMaP algorithm for all passive microwave radiometers in orbit, including not just microwave imagers but also microwave sounders. The retrieved rainfall rates, together with infrared images, are used for the high-resolution rainfall products, which leads to much better agreement with rain gauge observations.

%X We prove that if a metric measure space satisfies the volume doubling condition and the Caffarelli–Kohn–Nirenberg inequality with the same exponent n ≥ 3, then it has exactly the n-dimensional volume growth. As an application, if an n-dimensional Finsler manifold of non-negative n-Ricci curvature satisfies the Caffarelli–Kohn–Nirenberg inequality with the sharp constant, then its flag curvature is identically zero. In the particular case of Berwald spaces, such a space is necessarily isometric to a Minkowski space.

%X In recent years, the absolute value equation (AVE) has attracted growing attention. The absolute value program (AVP) is an extension of AVE, which contains absolute values of variables in its objective function and constraints. In this article, we propose an algorithm for the AVP, which is based on the branch-and-bound method. In the branching procedure, we generate two subproblems by restricting the sign of a variable to be nonnegative or nonpositive. In the bounding procedure, we utilize the duality results for AVP. Furthermore, we carry out numerical experiments for nonconvex multi-facility location problems to show the validity of the proposed algorithm.

%X Transition metal ions such as Mn[2+], Fe[2+], or Co[2+] provide an interesting alternative to rare earth dopants in optically active glasses. In terms of their magneto-optical properties, they are not yet very well exploited. Here, we report on the effect of Mn[2+] on Faraday rotation in a metaphosphate glass matrix along the join Mn{x}Sr{1-x}(PO{3}){2} with x = 0...1. Mn[2+] shows small optical extinction in the visible spectral range and, compared to other transition metal ions, a high effective magnetic moment. At high Mn- levels, however, the magneto-optical activity of Mn[2+] is strongly quenched due to ionic clustering. The magnetic properties of the heavily Mn[2+]-loaded phosphate matrix are dominated by a superexchange interaction in the Mn[2+]-O-Mn[2+] bridge with antiparallel spin alignment between Mn[2+] and O[2-] species. The apparent paramagnetic potential of Mn[2+] species can therefore not be exploited at room temperature.

%T First-principles thermodynamics of La2O3-P2O5 pseudobinary system
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/161778
%V 84
%X Phase stabilities in the La2O3-P2O5 pseudobinary system have been theoretically analyzed. Phonon modes of five crystals, i.e., La2O3, La3PO7, LaPO4, LaP3O9, and LaP5O14, and vibrational modes of gaseous P2O5(g) are computed from first principles in order to obtain the contribution of vibrations to the free energy. Additional dynamical contributions, i.e., rotations and translations are also taken into account for the gaseous P2O5(g). Vibrational states strongly reflect the crystal structures and bonding states. In this system, the strong P-O covalent bonds in PO4 units and the relatively weak La-O bonds are found to be the key factors determining the vibrational spectra. In the oxyphosphate, La3PO7, the two bonding states are coexisting, and the vibrational spectrum is approximately an average of La2O3 and LaPO4. On the other hand, the P2O5-rich compounds, i.e., LaP3O9 and LaP5O14, cannot be treated in the same manner. Their PO4 units form corner-sharing networks whose vibrations are strongly correlated. The networks raise the vibrational frequencies, leading to high-frequency modes up to 40 THz. The Gibbs energies using the calculated vibrational spectra are in reasonable agreement with the available data of La2O3, LaPO4, and P2O5(g), e.g., the differences between the calculated and reported values are less than 2 kJ/mol-atom (20 meV/atom) at 1500 K. The Gibbs energies and the phase stabilities of the other three compounds, La3PO7, LaP3O9, and LaP5O14, are evaluated, whose data are yet unknown so far.

%X The alginate biofilm-producing bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii aerobically fixes nitrogen by oxygensensitivenitrogenases. Here we investigated the bacterial response to nitrogen/oxygen gas mixtures. A. vinelandii cellswere cultured in nitrogen-free minimal media containing gas mixtures differing in their ratios of nitrogen and oxygen. The bacteria did not grow at oxygen concentrations >75 % but grew well in the presence of 5 % nitrogen/25 % oxygen.Growth of wild-type and alginate-deficient strains when cultured with 50 % oxygen did not differ substantially, indicatingthat alginate is not required for the protection of nitrogenases from oxygen damage. In response to decreasing nitrogenlevels, A. vinelandii produced greater amounts of alginate, accompanied by the formation of blebs on the cell surface. Theencystment of vegetative cells occurred in tandem with the release of blebs and the development of a multilayered exine.Immunoelectron microscopy using anti alginate-antibody revealed that the blebs contained alginate molecules. Bycontrast, alginate-deficient mutants could not form blebs. Taken together, our data provide evidence for a novel blebdependentpolysaccharide export system in A. vinelandii that is activated in response to low nitrogen gas levels.

%X A brief overview of siloxane-based low-density aerogels and aerogels-like xerogels is presented. Aerogels are highly porous solids composed of inorganic oxides, metals, cross-linked polymers and carbons, and are known to possess a number of excellent physical properties such as high visible-light transparency with low refractive index, low dielectric properties, and extremely-low thermal conductivity. Aerogels are therefore regarded as a promising candidate for applications such as superinsulators; however, a mass production and applications of aerogels have been significantly discouraged due to the lack of mechanical properties since the first invention in 1931. This review introduces the substantial effort to improve the mechanical properties of aerogels with particularly highlighting our recent findings on elastic organic–inorganic hybrid aerogel monoliths obtained from methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) using the controlled sol–gel chemistry.

%X The current study was initiated to evaluate the potential of sugar saps from nipa (Nypa fruticans) palm as sustainable feedstock for ethanol production. Nipa palms managed as plantations on four sites was chosen for this study with palms within 8–100 years of age. All palms studied were found to have the potential to produce sugar saps from 0.4 to 1.2 L d[-1] per palm. Further chemical characterization of its saps gave a total composition of 159–214 g kg[-1] mainly composed of sucrose, glucose and fructose. In addition, the elemental analysis gave 5 g kg[-1] of inorganics with Na, K and Cl being its main inorganic elements. Preliminary batch fermentative assays using Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed that nipa saps can be converted to ethanol within 30–48 h in conditions with and without nutrient supplementation. Furthermore, the fermentation trends were similar to sugarcane sap with high ethanol conversions up to 96.9% and 95.5% achieved for both nutrient conditions. Further analysis on inorganic elements before and after fermentation showed that specific elements of Mg, Ca, P and S were significantly reduced and could have assisted the fermentation. Based on the results obtained from sap collection, chemical characterization and fermentation, the ethanol potential from nipa planted at a density of 1000 ha[-1] would range from 4550–9100 L ha[-1] y[-1]. Conclusively, nipa sap showed some interesting characteristics which makes it a potential feedstock for ethanol production.

%T Accelerating the Tempo of the Segmentation Clock by Reducing the Number of Introns in the Hes7 Gene
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/163492

%X Periodic somite segmentation is controlled by the cyclic gene Hes7, whose oscillatory expression depends upon negative feedback with a delayed timing. The mechanism that regulates the pace of segmentation remains to be determined, but mathematical modeling has predicted that negative feedback with shorter delays would give rise to dampened but more rapid oscillations. Here, we show that reducing the number of introns within the Hes7 gene shortens the delay and results in a more rapid tempo of both Hes7 oscillation and somite segmentation, increasing the number of somites and vertebrae in the cervical and upper thoracic region. These results suggest that the number of introns is important for the appropriate tempo of oscillatory expression and that Hes7 is a key regulator of the pace of the segmentation clock.

%X Mosaic processing of SAR images by ERS 1/2 AMI revealed the detailed topography within a large valley (middle Slessor Glacier) in Coats Land, East Antarctica, showing oval and feather-shaped features that correspond to precipitous cliffs and accumulated crevasses, respectively. Time-series analysis of SAR intensity images acquired on six dates within the period October 1991 to August 2000 revealed the following topographic changes over time: (1) the feather-shaped feature moved down the slope at a rate of about 100 m/year; and (2) the extent of crevasse areas increased with time, both at the northern end of the feather-shaped feature and at the northeastern tip of the oval feature, with the increasing rates being much larger in the case of the feather-shaped feature. High increase ratios were generally correlated with a rapid increase in wintertime temperature within a short period of about 2 weeks: the relationship was approximated by an exponential function. Furthermore, we interpreted that the occurrence of a fault in the subglacial topography may have led to the initiation of ice fractures and a subsequent concentration of crevasses at the end of the feather-shaped feature.

%T Back bombardment for dispenser and lanthanum hexaboride cathodes
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/145930
%V 14
%X The back bombardment (BB) effect limits wide usage of thermionic rf guns. The BB effect induces not only ramping-up of a cathode’s temperature and beam current, but also degradation of cavity voltage and beam energy during a macropulse. This paper presents a comparison of the BB effect for the case of dispenser tungsten-base (DC) and lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) thermionic rf gun cathodes. For each, particle simulation codes are used to simulate the BB effect and electron beam dynamics in a thermionic rf gun cathode. A semiempirical equation is also used to investigate the stopping range and deposited heat power of BB electrons in the cathode material. A numerical simulation method is used to calculate the change of the cathode temperature and current density during a single macropulse. This is done by solving two differential equations for the rf gun cavity equivalent circuit and one-dimensional thermal diffusion equation. High electron emission and small beam size are required for generation of a high-brightness electron beam, and so in this work the emission properties of the cathode are taken into account. Simulations of the BB effect show that, for a pulse of 6 μs duration, the DC cathode experiences a large change in the temperature compared with LaB6, and a change in current density 6 times higher. Validation of the simulation results is performed using experimental data for beam current beyond the gun exit. The experimental data is well reproduced using the simulation method.

%X Structural adjustment programs (SAP) and market liberalization policies of the past 20 years in Ghana have transformed the agricultural sector in many ways. One marked example is the increase in production of fresh pineapples for European markets. This paper examines the characteristics of three categories of pineapple producers for export: smallholders, nonresident commercial farmers, and large-scale producer-exporters. The smallholders offered exporters little advantage over large plantations and were marginalized. A donor-supported new export company is also examined and interpreted as an institutional solution to overcome the disadvantages faced by the smallholders.

%T Infinite-layer iron oxide with a square-planar coordination
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/85019
%V 450
%X Conventional high-temperature reactions limit the control of coordination polyhedra in transition-metal oxides to those obtainable within the bounds of known coordination geometries for a given transition metal. For example, iron atoms are almost exclusively coordinated by three-dimensional polyhedra such as tetrahedra and octahedra. However, recent works have shown that binary metal hydrides act as reducing agents at low temperatures, allowing access to unprecedented structures. Here we show the reaction of a perovskite SrFeO3 with CaH2 to yield SrFeO2, a new compound bearing a square-planar oxygen coordination around Fe2+. SrFeO2 is isostructural with 'infinite layer' cupric oxides, and exhibits a magnetic order far above room temperature in spite of the two-dimensional structure, indicating strong in-layer magnetic interactions due to strong Fe d to O p hybridization. Surprisingly, SrFeO2 remains free from the structural instability that might well be expected at low temperatures owing to twofold orbital degeneracy in the Fe2+ ground state with D4h point symmetry. The reduction and the oxidation between SrFeO2 and SrFeO3 proceed via the brownmillerite-type intermediate SrFeO2.5, and start at the relatively low temperature of 400 K, making the material appealing for a variety of applications, including oxygen ion conduction, oxygen gas absorption and catalysis.

%T Loss of a Rho-Regulated Actin Nucleator, mDia2, Impairs Cytokinesis during Mouse Fetal Erythropoiesis
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/179461
%V 5
%X The small GTPase Rho and mDia2, a Rho-regulated actin nucleator, function as critical regulators of cytokinesis in cultured cells. However, their involvement in cytokinesis during mammalian development remains unknown. Here, we generated mice deficient in mDia2 and examined the role of Rho signaling in cytokinesis during development. mDia2-deficient mice survive until embryonic day 11.5 (E11.5), exhibit severe anemia with multinucleate erythroblasts, and die in utero by E12.5. mDia2-deficient erythroid cells differentiate normally, though in a delayed manner, but exhibit cytokinesis failure with decreased accumulation of F-actin in the cleavage furrow during late differentiation from proerythroblasts. On the other hand, inactivation of Rho induces cytokinesis failure from the earlier progenitor stage. mDia2-deficient erythroblasts, however, are able to enucleate their nuclei. Our findings have thus revealed that mDia2 functions critically in cytokinesis in vivo during erythropoiesis and further suggest that the cytokinesis mechanism in development diverges downstream of Rho. They also demonstrate that cytokinesis and enucleation utilize different mechanisms.

%X In this paper, the measurement of capacitance variation, of an on-chip power distribution network (PDN) due to the change of internal states of a CMOS logic circuit, is studied. A state-dependent PDN-capacitance model that explains measurement results will be also proposed. The model is composed of capacitance elements related to MOS transistors, signal and power supply wires, and substrate. Reflecting the changes of electrode potentials, the capacitance elements become state-dependent. The capacitive elements are then all connected in parallel between power supply and ground to form the proposed model. By using the proposed model, state-dependence of PDN-capacitances for different logic circuits are studied in detail. The change of PDN-capacitance exceeds 12% of its total capacitance in some cases, which corresponds to 6% shift of anti-resonance frequency. Consideration of the state-dependence is important for modeling the PDN-capacitance.
