6.9 %. Analyses were performed on full analysis set (FAS) of randomized subjects taking medications as allocated, and underwent 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTTs) before and after treatment. The primary outcome was insulinogenic index to quantify early-phase insulin secretion after treatment, which was evaluated by analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results: Of 171 enrolled subjects, 68 in the sitagliptin group and 65 in the glimepiride group were included in the FAS (mean age, 64 years; baseline (HbA1c), 7.4 %). The primary outcome revealed a significantly higher insulinogenic index in the sitagliptin group than that in the glimepiride group (p = 0.036). Sitagliptin also reduced plasma glucose levels at 60 and 120 min during OGTT compared with glimepiride, while achieving a similar improvement in HbA1c during treatment. Body weight did not change in either of the two groups, and one case of hypoglycemia was observed in the glimepiride group. Conclusions: Sitagliptin shows better effects on insulinogenic index after 52-week treatment compared with glimepiride in Japanese patients with T2DM. %T Classification of Promoters Based on the Combination of Core Promoter Elements Exhibits Different Histone Modification Patterns
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/216026
%V 11
%X Four different histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4; two subunits each) constitute a histone octamer, around which DNA wraps to form histone-DNA complexes called nucleosomes. Amino acid residues in each histone are occasionally modified, resulting in several biological effects, including differential regulation of transcription. Core promoters that encompass the transcription start site have well-conserved DNA motifs, including the initiator (Inr), TATA box, and DPE, which are collectively called the core promoter elements (CPEs). In this study, we systematically studied the associations between the CPEs and histone modifications by integrating the Drosophila Core Promoter Database and time-series ChIP-seq data for histone modifications (H3K4me3, H3K27ac, and H3K27me3) during development in Drosophila melanogaster via the modENCODE project. We classified 96 core promoters into four groups based on the presence or absence of the TATA box or DPE, calculated the histone modification ratio at the core promoter region, and transcribed region for each core promoter. We found that the histone modifications in TATA-less groups were static during development and that the core promoters could be clearly divided into three types: i) core promoters with continuous active marks (H3K4me3 and H3K27ac), ii) core promoters with a continuous inactive mark (H3K27me3) and occasional active marks, and iii) core promoters with occasional histone modifications. Linear regression analysis and non-linear regression by random forest showed that the TATA-containing groups included core promoters without histone modifications, for which the measured RNA expression values were not predictable accurately from the histone modification status. DPE-containing groups had a higher relative frequency of H3K27me3 in both the core promoter region and transcribed region. In summary, our analysis showed that there was a systematic link between the existence of the CPEs and the dynamics, frequency and influence on transcriptional activity of histone modifications.

%V 21
%X Mutation of KRAS is a key step in many cancers. Mutations occur most frequently at codon 12, but the targeting of KRAS is notoriously difficult. We recently demonstrated selective reduction in the volume of tumors harboring the KRAS codon 12 mutation in a mouse model by using an alkylating hairpin N-methylpyrrole-N-methylimidazole polyamide seco-1, 2, 9, 9a-tetrahydrocyclopropa[1, 2-c]benz[1, 2-e]indol-4-one conjugate (conjugate 4) designed to target the KRAS codon 12 mutation sequence. Herein, we have compared the alkylating activity of 4 against three other conjugates that were also designed to target the KRAS codon 12 mutation sequence. Conjugate 4 displayed greater affinity for the G12D mutation sequence than for the G12V sequence. A computer-minimized model suggested that conjugate 4 could bind more efficiently to the G12D match sequence than to a one-base-pair mismatch sequence. Conjugate 4 was modified for next-generation sequencing. Bind-n-Seq analysis supported the evidence showing that conjugate 4 could target the G12D mutation sequence with exceptionally high affinity and the G12V mutation sequence with much higher affinity than that for the wild-type sequence.

%T Target molecules of food phytochemicals: food science bound for the next dimension.
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/172222
%V 3
%X Phytochemicals are generally defined as secondary metabolites in plants that play crucial roles in their adaptation to a variety of environmental stressors. There is a great body of compelling evidence showing that these metabolites have pronounced potentials for regulating and modulating human health and disease onset, as shown by both experimental and epidemiological approaches. Concurrently, enormous efforts have been made to elucidate the mechanism of actions underlying their biological and physiological functions. For example, the pioneering work of Tachibana et al. uncovered the receptor for (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg) as the 67 kDa laminin receptor, which was shown to partially mediate the functions of EGCg, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-proliferative activities. Thereafter, several protein kinases were identified as binding proteins of flavonoids, including myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol. Isothiocyanates, sulfur-containing phytochemicals present in cruciferous plants, are well known to target Keap1 for activating the transcription factor Nrf2 for inducing self-defensive and anti-oxidative gene expression. In addition, we recently identified CD36 as a cell surface receptor for ursolic acid, a triterpenoid ubiquitously occurring in plants. Importantly, the above mentioned target proteins are indispensable for phytochemicals to exhibit, at least in part, their bioactivities. Nevertheless, it is reasonable to assume that some of the activities and potential toxicities of metabolites are exerted via their interactions with unidentified, off-target proteins. This notion may be supported by the fact that even rationally designed drugs occasionally display off-target effects and induce unexpected outcomes, including toxicity. Here we update the current status and future directions of research related to target molecules of food phytochemicals.

%T Strontium isotope evidence of migration and diet in relation to ritual tooth ablation: a case study from the Inariyama Jomon site, Japan
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/148372
%V 38
%X Ritual tooth ablation was extensively practiced among Jomon (Japanese Neolithic) societies in their final phase (ca. 3000-2300 BP). This tradition includes two different tooth ablation patterns, type 4I and type 2C, referring to extraction of the mandibular incisors and canines, respectively. However, the reason for this difference is unclear. Previous carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis of human remains from the Inariyama shell mound revealed that type 4I individuals were more dependent on terrestrial resources and type 2C individuals on marine resources. To test this hypothesis, we performed strontium (Sr) isotope (87Sr/86Sr) analyses on the same skeletal remains and on modern plants around the site. Because Sr isotope ratios of plants differ according to the local geology and seawater has a consistent Sr isotope ratio, the Sr isotope ratios of tooth enamel can reveal both migration and diet. Comparing Sr isotope ratios in plants and seawater with those of tooth enamel, we identified four possible immigrants. Type 4I locals had significantly higher Sr isotope ratios than type 2C locals. The ratios of the type 4I and type 2C locals were close to those of terrestrial plants and seawater, respectively, suggesting that type 4I locals had incorporated much Sr from terrestrial resources and type 2C locals from marine resources. These results support the hypothesis that ritual tooth ablation reflects dietary differences throughout an individual’s life, and they suggest possible occupational differentiation among the Jomon people.

%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/109891
%V 21
%X This paper studies the gravity influence on collisions of monodispersed droplets in homogeneous isotropic turbulence by means of direct numerical simulations (DNSs). The DNS results show that, in certain Stokes and Reynolds regimes, collision frequencies are significantly reduced in the presence of gravity. Those decreases are mainly attributable to the decrease in the droplet relative velocity, since the change in radial distribution function—often referred to preferential concentration—is small. Further analysis of the results reveals that droplet sedimentation due to gravity shortens the droplet-fluid interaction time, consequently weakening the relative motions between droplets. These observations lead to an analytical model that can be used to estimate the velocity fluctuations of sedimenting particles under gravity. Utilizing this model, we constructed a further analytical model for estimating the gravitational influence on collisions. Given flow and particle parameters, the model calculates the ratio of collision frequencies with and without the effect of gravity. Past studies simply noted that the gravitational influence is negligible when the droplet sedimenting velocity is much smaller than the flow velocity fluctuations. Our analytical model further suggests that the gravitational influence on collisions of monodispersed cloud droplets with non-negligible sedimentation rates stays negligibly small even in high Reynolds number flows, such as those typically found in convective clouds.

%X In this paper, we derive a one-dimensional convection-diffusion model for a rarefied gas flow in a two-dimensional curved channel on the basis of the Boltzmann (Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook) model. The flow is driven by the temperature gradient along the channel walls, which is known as the thermal creep phenomenon. This device can be used as a micropumping system without any moving part. Our derivation is based on the asymptotic technique of the diffusion approximation. It gives a macroscopic (fluid) approximation of the microscopic (kinetic) equation. We also derive the connection conditions at the junction where the curvature is not continuous. The pumping device is simulated by using a numerical approximation of our convection-diffusion model which turns out to agree very well with full two-dimensional kinetic simulations. It is then used to obtain very fast computations on long pumping devices, while the computational cost of full kinetic computations nowadays is still prohibitive for such cases.

%X An SiC power device possesses features like high breakdown voltage, fast switching capability, and high temperature operation, and is expected to be superior to conventional Si power devices. This paper clarifies the switching capability of an SiC Schottky barrier diode (SBD) in rectification of high frequency ac voltage. The dynamic behavior of the SiC SBD for switching operation is modeled based on semiconductor physics and device structure, and is characterized by its dc current-voltage (I-V) and ac capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics. A C-V characterization system, which measures capacitance using a dc bias voltage corresponding to the maximum rated voltage of the SiC SBD, is developed. The C-V characteristics are evaluated through experiments over the rated voltage range. These results explain the punch-through structure and device parameters. The dynamic behavior of the proposed model is validated through experiments on half-wave rectification of ac voltages over a wide frequency range. As a relational expression of voltage, current, and frequency of an applied ac sinusoidal voltage, the performance criterion of the device is established for rectification. The model also quantitatively assesses the switching capability of SiC SBDs. The model and performance criteria are beneficial for circuit design and device evaluation.

%X First, the Broken Egg Phenomenon (BEgg) which constitutes this symposium’s starting point is presented. It was observed accidentally in the course of the author’s analog computer experiments for a Periodically Forced Self-Oscillatory System, just 50 years and 5 days ago. Then, experimental researches are given from another study conducted in accordance with the BEgg phenomenon which was implemented as an electronic circuit. Finally, the prescriptive systems are proposed in order to survey the phenomena which occur in Periodically Forced Self-Oscillatory Systems. Among various steady states in the systems, regular (predictable) phenomena and their bifurcation sets are presented, covering all such phenomena that are readily observed, perhaps excepting some phenomena of so-called second kind. Various chaotic attractors are also collected, and it is shown that global bifurcations and classification of chaotic attractors are often related, but it seems to be extremely difficult to describe them completely.

%X The issue of how to improve product quality and product yield in a brief period of time becomes more critical in many industries. Even though industrial processes are totally different in appearance, the problems to solve are highly similar: how to build a reliable model from a limited data, how to analyze the model and relate it to first principles, how to optimize operating condition, and how to realize an on-line monitoring and control system and maintain it. In this paper, statistical process monitoring and control methodologies are briefly surveyed, and our application results in steel facilities are presented. The achievements of the present work are as follows: (1) the development of a new method that can cope with qualitative quality information and relate operating conditions to product quality or product yield, (2) the simultaneous analysis of multiple processing units including a converter, a continuous caster, a blooming process, and rolling processes, and (3) the successful application results in the steel industry.

%V 182
%X An indirect boundary element method (BEM) that uses the fast multipole method (FMM) was accelerated using graphics processing units (GPUs) to reduce the time required to calculate a three-dimensional electrostatic field. The BEM is designed to handle cubic voxel models and is specialized to consider square voxel walls as boundary surface elements. The FMM handles the interactions among the surface charge elements and directly outputs surface integrals of the fields over each individual element. The CPU code was originally developed for field analysis in human voxel models derived from anatomical images. FMM processes are programmed using the NVIDIA Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) with double-precision floating-point arithmetic on the basis of a shared pseudocode template. The electric field induced by DC-current application between two electrodes is calculated for two models with 499, 629 (model 1) and 1, 458, 813 (model 2) surface elements. The calculation times were measured with a four-GPU configuration (two NVIDIA GTX295 cards) with four CPU cores (an Intel Core i7-975 processor). The times required by a linear system solver are 31 s and 186 s for models 1 and 2, respectively. The speed-up ratios of the FMM range from 5.9 to 8.2 for model 1 and from 5.0 to 5.6 for model 2. The calculation speed for element-interaction in this BEM analysis was comparable to that of particle-interaction using FMM on a GPU.

%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/109941

%X Designing multimodal freight transport networks can facilitate the economic development of regions and countries as well as help to reduce negative environmental impacts. It is therefore crucial that such be undertaken in areas where more priority is given on road-based freight transport systems. This paper proposes a model for strategic transport planning, particularly in freight terminal development and interregional freight transport network design. The model determines a suitable set of actions from a number of possible actions, such as improving the existing infrastructure or establishing new roads, railways, sea links, and freight terminals. Modelling is undertaken within the framework of bilevel programming, where a multimodal multiclass user traffic assignment technique is incorporated within the lower-level problem, whilst the upper-level problem determines the best combination of actions such that the freight-related benefit-cost ratio is maximised. The upper-level problem involves combinatorial optimisation, and a heuristic approach based on genetic local search is applied as a solution technique. Empirical results of the model as applied to an actual large-sized interregional intermodal freight transport network show that genetic local search could provide better performance as compared to other genetic algorithm-based, as well as tabu search-based, heuristics. The model is successfully applied to transport network planning in the Philippines, where the development of a freight transport network is necessary to increase the utilisation of other modes rather than road-based vehicles.

%X Co-L2, 3 x-ray-absorption near-edge structures (XANES) and electron-energy-loss near-edge structures (ELNES) are calculated from first principles, taking into account the configuration interactions among molecular orbitals for model clusters obtained using fully-relativistic one-electron calculations. The spectra for LaCoO3 at low temperature and for LiCoO2, both of which have low-spin Co3+ ions in similar local environments, are well reproduced. To elucidate the cause of the spectral shape, the effects of the crystal structure and coordination distance are investigated using idealized crystal structures of layered rock salt, perovskite, rock salt, and spinel. The calculated spectra for these crystals with the same coordination distance are found to show clear differences despite identical 3d electronic configurations and local environments of the first ligand shell. The crystal structure dependence can be explained by the difference in the Madelung potential acting on the 3d orbitals. The results of the calculations for various coordination distances indicate that not only the crystal field splitting parameter, namely, 10Dq, but also the coordination distance is a key factor in determining the spectral shape. This is attributed to the change in the spatial distribution of the 3d orbitals.

%X This study proposes an efficient exact algorithm for the precedence-constrained single-machine scheduling problem to minimize total job completion cost where machine idle time is forbidden. The proposed algorithm is based on the SSDP (Successive Sublimation Dynamic Programming) method and is an extension of the authors’ previous algorithms for the problem without precedence constraints. In this method, a lower bound is computed by solving a Lagrangian relaxation of the original problem via dynamic programming and then it is improved successively by adding constraints to the relaxation until the gap between the lower and upper bounds vanishes. Numerical experiments will show that the algorithm can solve all instances with up to 50 jobs of the precedence-constrained total weighted tardiness and total weighted earliness–tardiness problems, and most instances with 100 jobs of the former problem.

%V 81
%X In most amorphous insulating magnets, the magnetic structure is dominated by the random distribution of magnetic moments as well as the predominant antiferromagnetic interaction among them, inevitably leading to a transition from high-temperature paramagnetic to low-temperature spin glass phase. In this paper, we report our discovery of ferromagnetic amorphous oxides with reentrant spin glass behavior. Unlike most oxide glasses, there is a strong tendency for the magnetic interaction of Eu2+ ions to be ferromagnetic in oxide glasses, as obviously indicated by the positive values of Weiss temperature. Comprehensive investigations of low-temperature magnetic properties for the present Eu2+-containing glasses have revealed a typical behavior of reentrant ferromagnets. We discuss the possible mechanisms behind the ferromagnetic interactions, as well as the origin of reentrant spin glass nature, based on the specific electronic structure of Eu2+ compounds.

%T Organic Substances Interfere with Reverse Transcription-Quantitative PCR-Based Virus Detection in Water Samples.
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/196052
%V 81
%X Reverse transcription (RT)-PCR-based virus detection from water samples is occasionally hampered by organic substances that are coconcentrated during virus concentration procedures. To characterize these organic substances, samples containing commercially available humic acid, which is known to inhibit RT-PCR, and river water samples were subjected to adsorption-elution-based virus concentration using an electronegative membrane. In this study, the samples before, during, and after the concentration were analyzed in terms of organic properties and virus detection efficiencies. Two out of the three humic acid solutions resulted in RT-quantitative PCR (qPCR) inhibition that caused >3-log10-unit underestimation of spiked poliovirus. Over 60% of the organics contained in the two solutions were recovered in the concentrate, while over 60% of the organics in the uninhibited solution were lost during the concentration process. River water concentrates also caused inhibition of RT-qPCR. Organic concentrations in the river water samples increased by 2.3 to 3.9 times after the virus concentration procedure. The inhibitory samples contained organic fractions in the 10- to 100-kDa size range, which are suspected to be RT-PCR inhibitors. According to excitation-emission matrices, humic acid-like and protein-like fractions were also recovered from river water concentrates, but these fractions did not seem to affect virus detection. Our findings reveal that detailed organic analyses are effective in characterizing inhibitory substances.

Here we report the screening of ternary zinc nitride semiconductors using first-principles calculations of electronic structure, stability and dopability. This approach identifies as-yet-unreported CaZn[2]N[2] that has earth-abundant components, smaller carrier effective masses than gallium nitride and a tunable direct bandgap suited for light emission and harvesting. High-pressure synthesis realizes this phase, verifying the predicted crystal structure and band-edge red photoluminescence. In total, we propose 21 promising systems, including Ca[2]ZnN[2], Ba[2]ZnN[2] and Zn[2]PN[3], which have not been reported as semiconductors previously. Given the variety in bandgaps of the identified compounds, the present study expands the potential suitability of nitride semiconductors for a broader range of electronic, optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications.

%T Variational Inequality Formulation of a Class of Multi-Leader-Follower Games
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/151706
%V 151
%X The multi-leader-follower game can be looked on as a generalization of the Nash equilibrium problem and the Stackelberg game, which contains several leaders and a number of followers. Recently, the multi-leader-follower game has been drawing more and more attention, for example, in electricity power markets. However, when we formulate a general multi-leader-follower game as a single-level game, it will give rise to a lot of problems, such as the lack of convexity and the failure of constraint qualifications. In this paper, to get rid of these difficulties, we focus on a class of multi-leader-follower games that satisfy some particular, but still reasonable assumptions, and show that these games can be formulated as ordinary Nash equilibrium problems, and then as variational inequalities. We establish some results on the existence and uniqueness of a leader-follower Nash equilibrium. We also present illustrative numerical examples from an electricity power market model.

%T Interaction-component analysis of the urea effect on amino acid analogs.
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/187046
%V 15
%X Transfer energetics from pure water to a urea-water mixture is examined for a set of amino acid analog solutes by using molecular dynamics simulation and free-energy calculation. The free energy of transfer from pure-water solvent to 8 M urea-water mixed solvent is calculated for each solute, and the urea-water mixture is shown to be a more favorable solvent than pure water. The correlation of the transfer free energy is then examined against the corresponding changes upon transfer of the average sum of solute-solvent interaction energy and its electrostatic and van der Waals components. A strong correlation is observed against the change in solute-solvent energy, with a dominant contribution from the van der Waals component for neutral solutes. The electrostatic component exhibits a weak correlation due to the compensation between the contributions from urea and water. The transfer free energy is further decomposed into the contributions from urea and water within an approximate framework of the energy-representation theory of solvation. It is found that urea makes a favorable contribution to the transfer free energy. The contribution from water depends on the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of the solute. Urea and water act cooperatively for hydrophobic solute, and are competitive against each other for hydrophilic solute. The effect of excluded volume is also addressed, and is seen to be minor in the transfer energetics due to the compensation between the contributions from urea and water.

%X The universal sl2 invariant is an invariant of bottom tangles from which one can recover the colored Jones polynomial of links. We are interested in the relationship between topological properties of bottom tangles and algebraic properties of the universal sl2 invariant. A bottom tangle T is called Brunnian if every proper subtangle of T is trivial. In this paper, we prove that the universal sl2 invariant of n-component Brunnian bottom tangles takes values in a small subalgebra of the n-fold completed tensor power of the quantized enveloping algebra Uh(sl2). As an application, we give a divisibility property of the colored Jones polynomial of Brunnian links.

%X We investigate algebraic structure of light-cone string field theory which respects the spacetime supersymmetry su(2|2). Extracting building blocks from the explicit oscillator expressions of light-cone superstring field theory on the pp-wave and the flat background, we propose a model for more generic backgrounds by giving an algebraic procedure to construct supercharges and Hamiltonian without referring to explicit oscillator expressions. Based on this strategy, we systematically construct interaction terms of light-cone string field theory on the pp-wave background and some examples of its generalization. We also study the supergravity limit of the interaction terms on the pp-wave background.

%X In the obnoxious facility game with a set of agents in a space, we wish to design a mechanism, a decision-making procedure that determines a location of an undesirable facility based on locations reported by the agents, where we do not know whether the location reported by an agent is where exactly the agent exists in the space. For a location of the facility, the benefit of each agent is defined to be the distance from the location of the facility to where the agent exists. Given a mechanism, all agents are informed of how the mechanism utilizes locations reported by the agents to determine a location of the facility before they report their locations. Some agent may try to manipulate the decision of the facility location by strategically misreporting her location. As a fair decision-making, mechanisms should be designed so that no particular group of agents can get a larger benefit by misreporting their locations. A mechanism is called group strategy-proof if no subset of agents can form a group such that every member of the group can increase her benefit by misreporting her location jointly with the rest of the group. For a given mechanism, a point in the space is called a candidate if it can be output as the location of the facility by the mechanism for some set of locations reported by agents. In this paper, we consider the case where a given space is a tree metric, and characterize the group strategy-proof mechanisms in terms of distribution of all candidates in the tree metric. We prove that there exists a group strategy-proof mechanism in the tree metric if and only if the tree has a point to which every candidate has the same distance.

%T Topoisomerase II, scaffold component, promotes chromatin compaction in vitro in a linker-histone H1-dependent manner
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/49170
%V 35
%X TopoisomeraseII (Topo II) is a major component of chromosomal scaffolds and essential for mitotic chromosome condensation, but the mechanism of this action remains unknown. Here, we used an in vitro chromatin reconstitution system in combination with atomic force and fluorescence microscopic analyses to determine how Topo II affects chromosomal structure. Topo II bound to bare DNA and clamped the two DNA strands together, even in the absence of ATP. In addition, Topo II promoted chromatin compaction in a manner dependent on histone H1 but independent of ATP. Histone H1-induced 30-nm chromatin fibers were converted into a large complex by Topo II. Fluorescence microscopic analysis of the Brownian motion of chromatin stained with 4', 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole showed that the reconstituted chromatin became larger following the addition of Topo II in the presence but not the absence of histone H1. Based on these findings, we propose that chromatin packing is triggered by histone H1-dependent, Topo II-mediated clamping of DNA strands.

%X The velocity distribution function of the steady-state Boltzmann equation for hard-core molecules in the presence of a temperature gradient has been obtained explicitly to second order in density and the temperature gradient. Some thermodynamical quantities are calculated from the velocity distribution function for hard-core molecules and compared with those for Maxwell molecules and the steady-state Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (BGK) equation. We have found qualitative differences between hard-core molecules and Maxwell molecules in the thermodynamical quantities, and also confirmed that the steady-state BGK equation belongs to the same universality class as Maxwell molecules.

%X The project Development of Area Informatics: With Emphasis on Southeast Asia (FY2005-09)[Shibayama 2005: 1] aims to create a new discipline called "area informatics," an approach that integrates the interdisciplinary field of informatics with area studies, which encompasses all academic disciplines, including natural ecology, environmental studies, human ecology, sociology, history, cultural studies, economics and political science. One of the core research topics of this project is the process of urban formation in Hanoi in the 19th and 20th centuries. This research aims to explain the history of urban development in Hanoi, which has been the capital of Vietnam for 1,000 years, and to digitize the research process and its results for publication. To explain the process of Hanoi's urban development and transformation based on the hypothesis "Through the continual filling in of lakes and ponds formed by the riverbed of the old Red River, Hanoi achieved significant urban development and transformation during the Nguyen Dynasty period" generated by Sakurai [Sakurai and Shibayama 2007: 37], research into this process was furthered through spatial analyses of various data gathered during the project, including maps, satellite images, cadastral maps and historic ruins and vestiges, carried out using GIS(Geographical Information Systems) and RS (Remote Sensing) technologies. This paper discusses the analyses of urban transformation in the 19th and 20th centuries with the main emphasis on the urbanized city, water areas, and pre-colonial villages.

%X In this paper, national identity is conceptualized in terms of competing representations of the putative "nation" based on which socio-political contests unfold and bureaucracy functions. Two key historical happenings marked the politics of national identity in West Malaysia: the 1969 racial riots and the Islamization policies. After 1969, comprehensive ethnic-based preferential policies were formalized, while Malay political primacy justified on the basis of indigeneity became entrenched. The Islamization Policy implemented from the 1980s mainstreamed the idea of Malaysia as a negara Islam. Executive curtailment of judicial autonomy led to institutional mutations dubbed by a scholar as the "silent re-writing of the Constitution." During the 1990s, despite selected socio-cultural measures of "liberalization" more accommodative of non-Malay interests, ethnic preferential treatments remained prevalent. Moreover, the conflation of the logic of Malay primacy with that of Islamic supremacy in institutional practices resulted in a rise in inter-religious contentions. Historic regime change became conceivable following recent political development. Nonetheless, prospects for radical revision of existing inter-religious dynamics remain dim because Islamic conservatism among Malay politicians transcends party-lines.

%X Aplog-1 is a unique analog of tumor-promoting aplysiatoxin that inhibits tumor-promotion by phorbol diesters and proliferation of tumor cells. While the structural features relevant to the biological activities of Aplog-1 remain to be identified, recent studies by us have suggested that local hydrophobicity around the spiroketal moiety of Aplog-1 is a crucial determinant of its anti-proliferative activity. This hypothesis led us to design 12,12-dimethyl-Aplog-1 (3), in which a hydrophobic geminal dimethyl group is installed proximal to the spiroketal moiety to improve biological potency. As expected, 3 was more effective than Aplog-1 in inhibiting cancer cell growth and binding to protein kinase Cδ, a putative receptor responsible for the biological response of Aplog-1. Moreover, an induction test on Epstein-Barr virus early antigen demonstrated 3 to be a better anti-tumor promoter than Aplog-1. These results indicate that 3 is a superior derivative of Aplog-1, and thus a more promising lead for anti-cancer drugs.

%T When Effort Rimes with Advantageous Selection: A New Approach to Life Insurance Pricing
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/65610
%V 75
%X This paper investigates the demand for and pricing of life insurance when insureds' risk aversion is correlated with their precautionary effort. We assume that the population is divided into two groups: (i) very risk-averse individuals who have a low probability of death (PoD) because of the precautionary effort they undertake and (ii) less risk-averse individuals who undertake less effort and thus have a higher PoD. After computing the pooling equilibrium price under perfect competition for a class of CRRA utility and bequest functions, we compute the level of demand for life insurance by the two groups. Under the assumption of negative correlation between risk aversion and risk exposure, lower-risk individuals still buy insurance even if the price offered is higher than the fair price corresponding to their group. This is because low risks are assumed to be more risk averse, valuing insurance so highly that they can tolerate higher than fair prices. We also present some cases when low-risk individuals purchase more than their high-risk neighbors even though they realize they are subsidizing the high risks. In such cases, the insurers gain the advantage of facing a PoD which is smaller than the rate they normally expect. This fact contradicts the so-called adverse selection hypothesis.

%X The movements of 10 radionuclides in the water-saturated soil were studied. Clay loam or sand obtained from reactor sites, and Toyoura standard quartz sand were used as a soil sample. Breakthrough curves and sorption distributions of radionuclides along soil columns were observed under various conditions such as pH, coexisted ions and the kinds of teaching solution. The results obtained are as follows : (1) the divalent ions such as 54Mn, 85Sr, 60Co and 65Zn were not adsorbed so intensively, and high mobilities were observed, (2) the radionuclides of 137Cs and 144Ce were extremely adsorbed on soil surface, and their mobilities were not so high as to the divalent ions described above, (3) the radionuclides of io6Ru, 95Zr, 95Nb and iiomAg were retained largely in the soils, but some parts of their radionuclide moved as easy as to the divalent ions in soil water system.

%X Linoleic acid isomerase in Lactobacillus plantarum was found to be a novel multi-component enzyme system widespread in membrane and soluble fractions. The isomerization reaction involved a hydration step, 10-hydroxy-12-octadecenoic acid production from linoleic acid, as part of the reaction, and the hydration reaction was catalyzed by the membrane fraction. Both membrane and soluble fractions were required for the whole isomerization reaction, i.e., conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) production from linoleic acid, and for CLA production from 10-hydroxy-12-octadecenoic acid, a reaction intermediate. The multi-component enzyme system was inhibited by o-phenanthroline, and divalent metal ions such as Ni^[2+] and Co^[2+] restored activity. Metal oxides such as VO4^[3+], MoO4^[2+], and MnO4^[2+] enhanced activity. The multi-component enzyme systems required oxidoreduction cofactors such as NADH together with FAD or NADPH for total activity

%X We retrospectively analyzed early postoperative complications in 293 consecutive patients withbladder cancer who underwent radical cystectomy with urinary diversion from 1990 to 2007 at the Department of Urology of the Sapporo Medical University School of Medicine. The Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (ver 3.0) was used to evaluate complications that occurred within 30 days after surgery, and grade 3 and higher grades according to the criteria were defined as complications in this study. The guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were used for the classification of surgical site infection. Early postoperative complications were found in 158 cases (54%). Acute pyelonephritis (APN), which was related to the removal of the ureteral catheter, was the most frequent complication, found in 96 (33%), followed by surgical site infection in 39 (13%), and ileus in 33 (11%). When transient APN was excluded, the rate for complications was 30%. Possible life-threatening complications were experienced in 15 patients (5%) including 2 (0.7%) who eventually died of the complications. The preoperative grade 3 score of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA score) was significantly related to development of early postoperative complications in univariate analysis. In multivariate analysis, a grade 3 ASA score and the estimated blood loss were independent factors to predict development of early complications. Postoperative nasogastric tubing was not related to ileus after surgery, suggesting that postoperative indwelling of the tube is not routinely needed. Although about half of the patients experienced early postoperative complications, they were usually transient and manageable. Thus, careful evaluation of the preoperative ASA score and a reduction in the amount of bleeding during surgery may lower the development of early postoperative complications.

%X Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GTP, E.C. 2.3.2.1) has been considered to be a member of γ-glutamyl cycle and playa physiological role in the transport of amino acids across cell membrane through this cycle. This enzyme was extracted from cancerous tissue obtained from 10 patients with renal cell carcinoma. These enzyme preparations were investigated electrophoretic ally and enzymologically in comparison with the enzyme of normal renal tissue, normal liver tissue and fetal renal tissue. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Five cancerous tissues had a novel γ-GTP which was electrophoretic ally different from that of normal kidney, fetal kidney or normal liver. Other properties of the novel γ-GTP were almost the same as that of normal kidney except molecular weight. 2) Molecular weight of the novel γ-GTP was about 130,000, while that of normal kidney was approximately 90,000. 3) With regard to the possible relationship between the histopathological findings of the renal cell carcinoma and the presence of the novel γ-GTP, it was revealed that the novel enzyme was detected more frequently in poorly differentiated renal cell carcinoma or in the tumor composed mainly of granular cells. Further investigation is necessary to establish the clinical significance of the novel γ-GTP, but at least it is suggested that this enzyme might be a biochemical marker of poorly differentiated renal cell carcinoma.

%T Generic transport coefficients of a confined electrolyte solution
%U http://hdl.handle.net/2433/196926

%X Physical parameters characterizing electrokinetic transport in a confined electrolyte solution are reconstructed from the generic transport coefficients obtained within the classical nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamic framework. The electro-osmotic flow, the diffusio-osmotic flow, the osmotic current, as well as the pressure-driven Poiseuille-type flow, the electric conduction, and the ion diffusion are described by this set of transport coefficients. The reconstruction is demonstrated for an aqueous NaCl solution between two parallel charged surfaces with a nanoscale gap, by using the molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. A Green-Kubo approach is employed to evaluate the transport coefficients in the linear-response regime, and the fluxes induced by the pressure, electric, and chemical potential fields are compared with the results of nonequilibrium MD simulations. Using this numerical scheme, the influence of the salt concentration on the transport coefficients is investigated. Anomalous reversal of diffusio-osmotic current, as well as that of electro-osmotic flow, is observed at high surface charge densities and high added-salt concentrations.

%X Porphyran (POR) from the red alga Porphyra yezoensis is a water soluble dietary fiber. In this study, we investigated the effect of dietary POR on glucose metabolism in KK-Ay mice (a model for type 2 diabetes). Mice were divided into 4 groups and fed a diet containing 5% cellulose (control), POR, POR Arg or POR K. After 3 wk of feeding, plasma insulin levels and the calculated homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index were significantly lower in the POR group than in the control group. Compared with the control group, plasma adiponectin levels were significantly increased in the POR, POR Arg and POR K groups. These results suggest that dietary POR should improve glucose metabolism in diabetes via up-regulation of adiponectin levels. In addition, the amount of propionic acid in the cecum of the POR group was significantly higher than in the control group and the profile of bacterial flora was changed by dietary POR. In the cecum of the POR, POR Arg and POR K groups, Bacteroides was significantly increased and Clostridium coccoides was significantly decreased compared with in the control group. The effects of dietary POR on the hindgut environment might contribute to the improvement of glucose metabolism.

%X The application of DNA-based hybrid catalysts for enantioselective synthesis has recently emerged. These catalysts, self-assembled from DNA and a metal complex with a specific ligand through supramolecular or covalent anchoring strategies, have demonstrated high enantioselectivity in a variety of carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reactions and have expanded their role in asymmetric catalysis. In this review, we summarize the advent and significant progress of DNA-based asymmetric catalysis and discuss remaining challenges in using DNA as a chiral scaffold. We hope that this review will inspire many of today’s active scientists in asymmetric catalysis.
