抄録: It is commonly stated that Indian merchantile communities in Bombay, especially the shetias, exercised limited but lasting influence over the local colonial government during the 19th century. This working paper would like to argue that the potential for Indian merchants to enjoy such political power might not be very high during the 1820s due to the military despotic nature of the Company Rule and to the disappearance of competing power to the East India Company in the western part of the subcontinent after closing of the Third Anglo-Maratha War. What happened during the so-called 'judiciary and executive conflicts' which took place between the judges of the 'King's Court' and the Company's local staffs during this period seems to back up a notion that to claim or to defend one's right under any despotic government is not easy.
