<研究論文>「着点」と「起点」が示す「目的/因果」表現の双方向性 --「ために」を中心に--

Abstract

日本語の「ために」には、「目的」を表す場合と「原因・理由」を表す場合がある。典型的には、前者は未完了の「る」でマークされ、後者は完了の「た」でマークされる。しかし、前件が「る」でマークされた場合、時には「原因・理由」に解釈される場合もあり、両者の間で「解釈のゆれ」が見られる場合も出てくる。本稿では、「に」が「目的」に向かうという「着点」でマークされて「目的」と解釈される場合と、正反対の「起点」という方向性が読み取られて生まれる「原因・理由」の解釈が、同じ一つの「ために」という表現で表されることについて考察する。時間軸に沿って前件と後件を並べると、「目的」の場合は後件から前件の示す「目的」に向かうという方向であり、「原因・理由」の場合は前件で示されたことが背景化され、そこを起点として後件の事態が生起することを実証していく。

Japanese word "tameni" is ambiguous in that it means both <purpose> and <cause/reason>. Typically, "tameni" co-occurs with non-perfective tense marker ("–ru") when it expresses <purpose>, while it cooccurs with perfective tense marker ("–ta") when it expresses <cause/reason>. There are some ambiguous cases, however, in which "tameni" co-occurs with "-ru". In the previous studies of Japanese linguistics, no attempt has been made to give a natural account of semantically ambiguous phenomena of this kind. The main objective of the present paper is on the one hand to explain this ambiguity in a natural way and on the other hand to predict the bidirectionality of source and goal in the causality and purpose expressions.
