抄録: This paper proposes an analysis to provide a unified explanation for the sheer contrast of visual images between the clean body of Christ depicted in many religious pictures, such as Pontormo's The Deposition from the Cross (1525-28), and bloody body in Passion Play in the 16th century. Passion Play is a dramatic presentation depicting the Passion of Jesus Christ: his trial, suffering and death. First, this paper reviews the outline of the Play including the processional penance by the flagellants, who also produced the Play. Second, this paper analyzes the stanzas in which the reverence of Christian is projected onto a blood of Christ and those in which its avoidance is projected onto his blood. Based on the analysis, this paper claims that the blood which is not depicted in the crucifixion scene is realized in the whipping scene of the Play and the flagellants' procession instead. Finally, this paper concludes that the blood of livestock that was used in the whipping scene was regarded as a sacrifice of the Jewish religion, whereas the blood of flagellants was taken as a medium of the transubstantiation of the Catholicism.
