古英語の副詞的対格が表す時間的継続のアスペクト的解釈について: 境界性、粒度の観点から

Abstract

本稿は、従来継続性を表すとされてきた古英語の副詞的対格の時間的意味をアスペクト論的観点から再検討し、実際には継続を表すとは⾔い難い⽤例が存在することを指摘する。また、その明確な時間的意味の分類が困難であることから、動詞・名詞・修飾語の意味素性をもとに時間的意味を記述することを提案する。古英語の副詞的格の時間的意味は、継続・時点・反復に区分されてきた。しかし、その分類基準が提⽰されていることはなく、同じ⽤例が先⾏研究により別様に判断されることもあった。そこで本稿は、客観的には同じ⻑さの時間も、捉え⽅ (粒度) の違いにより、時点とも継続ともみなせるという⽴場に則り、副詞的格の時間的意味の記述には、修飾語などで表される話者の主観的な捉え⽅に着⽬する必要があると主張する。その上で、動詞、主要部名詞、修飾語の意味論的特徴を併せて、より継続的・より点的と記述する⼿法が現実に即していると主張する。

This paper reexamines the temporal meaning of the adverbial accusative in Old English from an aspectual perspective and points out that, although the accusative is traditionally considered to denote duration of time, there are examples that fail to demonstrate durative connotation. Therefore, in order to deal with the difficulty of judging temporal meaning, this study proposes to describe it by combining semantic features of the verb, noun and the adjective in a sentence. Temporal meanings of the Old English adverbial cases were described as durative, punctual, or iterative in the previous literature. However, no clear criterion of distinction is indicated, nor is there any discussion as to whether this categorialization is legitimate or sufficient. There are also cases where the same sentence is interpreted differently among various scholars. Therefore, this paper bases the discussion on the aspectual theory according to which objectively the same length of time can be construed differently depending on the granularity of the temporal interpretation and maintains that the clearcut distinction of temporal meanings, especially in dead languages, is impossible. Hence, to describe those in Old English as objectively as possible, it is required to resort to the combination of features of the linguistic elements involved in the sentence.
