Bacteriological studies were performed with preoperative and postoperative urine specimens from total of 148 cases with urinary tract infection during the period 1965-1967 at the Department of Urology, Yamaguchi University. The findings ascertained in the present studies are as follows: 1. Cultivation of preoperative urine specimens yielded 151 strains, of which Enterococcus 40, E. coli 38, Staphylococcus 33, Pseudomonas 32 and so on. From postoperative specimens of same patients 375 strains were isolated, among them Pseudomonas 77, Enterococcus 74, Rettergella 70, Klebsiella 59, Proteus 51, E. coli 40 and so on were identified. A comparison between postoperative finding and preoperative one showed marked increases in Pseudomonas and Proteus genus after urological surgery. 2. By quantitative culture, high bacterial concentration was revealed in the infection of Klebsiella, Proteus, E. coli and relatively small colony count was confirmed in Staphylococcus and Streptococcus infection. 3. Drug sensitivity of the microbes were relatively low, and in the postoperative infection many of them showed resistance to almost all available antibiotics. 4. The urinary bacteriological pattern after operation could be classified into three types; namely, Type A: prompt bacteriological cure after operation (28%), 'Type B: delayed cure of bacteriuria after operation (55%) and Type C: persistent bacteriuria after operation (17%).en
