抄録: Gentamicin (GM) was intramuscularly administrated to twenty hospitalized patients with urinary tract infections in the dose of 60 mg x 2/day for 4 to 12 days. Eighteen of them were suffering from complicated infections and the remaining two were suffering from simple infections. Evaluated results were as follows: 1) In 18 patients with complicated infections, clinical effectiveness evaluated by subjective complaints, pyuria and microorganism by urine culture was excellent in 7 (38.9%), good in 4 (22.2%), fair in 11 (61.1%) and poor in 7 (38.9%). In 2 patients with simple infections, clinical effectiveness was excellent in one and good in the other. 2) The most probable predisposable factor of urinary tract infections was the indwelling catheter in the urinary tract. Clinical effectiveness of 8 cases with indwelling catheter was effective in 3 (37.5%) and that of 10 cases without indwelling catheter was effective in 8 (80.0%). 3) In the sensitivity test, GM was active against 6 out of 10 strains of Serratia, 5 out of 7 strains of Pseudomonas, 4 out of 5 Klebsiella, all of 3 strains of Enterobacter, all of 2 strains of Proteus, in total 23 out of 31 strains. 4) No clinical side effect was observed during GM administration in this trial, whereas in the laboratory examination a decrease in PSP was noted in 3 patients, a slight elevation in GOT and GPT in 2, and thrombocytopenia in 1 after GM therapy.
