抄録: The present article constitutes a part of the author's Comprehensive work on the city of Ch'ang-an under the T'ang. Chap. I: The size of Ch'ang-an in the T'ang period, measuring 8192 metres in width and 9619 in length, was amazingly big with eleven avenues 149 metres wide and with streets 88-134 metres wide crossing at right angles. The town-planning seems to have been rather disproportionately big in view of the size of polpulation and requirements of communication, and explanation will be found in the so-called T'ien-hsia ideology entertained by the T'ang Chinese as well as in their aesthetic taste of the golden means. Chap. II: The size of population exceeded one millon, including citizens, monks, nuns, slaves soldiers and temporary residents. Chap. III: Along the amazingly wide avenues there stood stone pillars, and drains were installed. One of the avenues, which was covered with white sand, was reserved for the Government officials to attend functions at the imperial palace. Chap. IV: Government employees were requested to attend their offices before sunrise, this making some special accomodations necessary. In this connection the fact must be kept in mind that they had a somewhat different notion of hour from our own.
