Abstract

The auther examines what is told on the soldier's clothing in Lao Kan's edition of the Etsin-gol MSS. in the light of the archaeological objects brought forth by the same expedition as well as those found by Sir Aurel Stein at Tun-huang and by Huang Wen-pi at Lou-lan. The resgisters of colonist soldiers and ordinary soldiers who were entitled to the clothing of government supply seem to be dated 85 B.C., suggeting that colonization by soldiers of Haui-yang (淮陽) and other origins in the Etsin-gol region had begun before 61 B.C., when Chao Ch'ung-kuo (趙充國) submitted to the throne a project of colonization by soldiers. The registers tell us that they came mostly from Ho-nan and Shan-tung. The soldier's clothing, which consists of hsi (襲), pao (袍), tan-i (單衣), k'u (絝), mo (韤), li (履), etc., was supplied by the government. Of those mentioned above, hsi, k'u, mo and li mean coat, trousers, socks avd footgear. The li were discovered at Tun-huang (敦煌) and Lou-lan (樓蘭). There are some MSS. which tell the districts of origin of cloth, to wit, Kuang-han (廣漢) and Ho-nei (河内) provinces. The material was largely linen and to some extent silk and leather. Sir Aurel Stein discovered pieces of cotton cloth at Tun-huang and Lou-lan. Probably the hsi and k'u became the later k'u and hsi, which resemble the clothing of the northern Asiatic nomad, and they were in the Han period in use as clothings not only of mounted soldiers but of the infantrymen and the common people, and as the result of the contact with the morthern nomads in the Six Dynasties this system of clothing spread among the populace as already pointed out by Wang Kuo-wei (王國維).
