Abstract

In 1924-26, the labour movement reached a new height in China while the Nationalst Revolution developed remarkably. But the latter was driven back and rendered inactive by the coup d'etat of Chiang Kai-shek in 1927. This was no accident but an inevitable result of the revolutionary process, and governed its subsequent direction. The base of the revolutionary movement was Canton, the general strike of 1925-26 was its background. The striking workers were supporters of the Kuomintang Government and the "Northern Expedition." So we can say that the strike was no mere strike.
