Abstract

The Taping Rebellion was not a democratic revolution of bourgeoigie but an agrarian rebellion in its fundamental nature. The masses of Central and South China participated in and supported it. It had a clearer principle, more rigorous organization and discipline than the former agrarian rebellions had had, moreover, it attempted to change the despotism of the Ch'ing and its social foundation by its progressive administration. It intended to reform the conditions of production and opened the way to the coming capitalism, and here lies the histolical importance of this Rebellion. The present auther relates the story of the Refrom from its beginning to its end together with its organization--the role of the Shang-ti-hui, hierarchy and military organization, the progressiveness and limit of its administration and its foreign relations.
