Abstract: | The so-called "Ning-bo merchants" are a group of merchants from Ningbo who assumed greater prominence in Shanghai after the frustration of the Taipin Rebellion. The capital accumulation of the merchants resulted from the management of the Qian-zhuang 錢莊 and comprador activities. They successfully accumulated the working fund under "favourable" conditions because of their reliance, in the management of the Qian-zhuang upon the chop loans issued by the foreign banks and because of their full application of the political and economic functions as compradors. This indicates, however, that the process of their capital accumulation is indeed the process of their subordination to foreign imperialism. "Bourgeoisie" in China, born in a degrading stage to semi-feudal and semi-colonial society, established "上海商務總會" early in the 20th century, their central force being in the hands of the Ning-bo merchants. In "上海商務總會" they founded another circle, "Zhe-jiang financial group", among the persons from the same locality. The "Zhe-jiang financial group" disclosed a compradorial and diplomatic nature in the process of the political upheaval at the end of the Qing Dynasty. |
