抄録: | In the Yung-cheng period of the Ch'ing dynasty the staple food was millet in north China, while that in middle and south China it was rice. All over China wheat and barley were also cultivated, and the area of wheat and barley cultivation was proportionate to that of rice, i.e., where rice was grown more, wheat and barley were raised less, and vice versa. It seems that the quotient of the cultivated area divided by the population indicates the general situation of the supply and demand of the staple food in each province. And Ssu-chuan (四川), Hu-nan (湖南), Kuang-tung (廣東) and some other provinces had probably enough, while such provinces as Fu-chien (福建) and Che-chiang (浙江) were in a straitened state. Grain requisitions in various forms seem to have aggravated the unbalanced supply and demand relations. Shortage of the staple food in these poor provinces was to a certain extent covered by the cultivation of wheat and barley, but the rest was imported from the rich provinces, and the main route of rice transportation was that connecting Han-k'ou-chen (漢口鎮) in Hu-pei (湖北) with Feng-chiao-chen (楓橋鎮) in Chiang-su (江蘇). |
