dc.description.abstract | It was a practice from the beginning of the Ch'ing dynasty to pay soldiers in copper coins. Since copper production was rather small in China, they used to import it from Japan. Already in the closing days of Ming (明), Chinese traders began to import copper in exchange for silk, sugar, medicines, etc., through the port of Nagasaki. With the development of trade with China the production of copper in Japan made a rapid progress, but as the result of exhaustion of rich mines copper production declined, and restriction was imposed on the export of copper. In 1715 the number of Chinese boats coming to Nagasaki was limited by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Such a situation led to serious disputes among the Chinese traders, and the slanderous charges made by the unchartered traders against the chartered merchants resulted even in a big political trouble, which was partly due to the fear of the Ch'ing Government to the Japanese pirates who had ravaged the coastal provinces of China during the Ming period. On the other hand, the Tokugawa Shogunate imposed restrictions not only on the export of copper but on that of gold and silver, which began to give adverse effect on Japanese economy, while the policy of the Shogunate brought a rise in the price of copper. | en |
