Abstract: The shipping merchants, who prospered until about the Chiach'ing (嘉慶) era, began to faIl into rapid decay in the eras of Hsienfeng (咸豐) and T'ungchih (同治) due to the foIlowing causes; various restrictions imposed upon them after the Taokulang (道光) era and the competition of Western shipping merchants. The impact of activities of foreign merchants has been often explained in the light of the backwardness of China. But at the same time the governmental restrictions imposed on the Chinese shipping merchants played an important role in checking their activities. The present study is an attempt to explain the decline of the shipping merchants from the institutional standpoint.
