Abstract: | The examination system ceased to exist during a period of about eighty years in the early period of the Yuan dynasty, following the destruction of Chin (金). This led the traditional literati to look for patronage of the military for promotion from the status of a"clerk" to that of an "official", while some of them were inclined to devote themselves to literay activities instead of entering government service under the Mongols. |
