抄録: Historical records confirm that it was during the Koryo 高麗 period that capital area was created as administrative units in the Korean history. The capital area as the administrative unit comprising a broad area that extended across 10 or more prefectures had not existed before in Korea. However, in the unified Silla, special regions had been established, differing in character from other districts and prefectures only in the narrow areas that encompassed the capital. These regions may be termed the capital area of the Silla state. The capital area of the Silla state was composed of two districts, one prefecture, and six military areas 停 neighboring the capital. Although the attempt to change to the capital area system had begun around the middle of the 8th century, the system was not fixed until the period from later 8th century to early 9th century. The capital area constituted the residential areas of the Silla aristocratic bureaucracy. But, at the same time, it was also a military region that protected the capital. Thus, the systematic establishment of the capital area represents an effort to secure a base for the government. Moreover, the capital area was modeled upon the Tang 唐 system. The capital area of the Silla state is the beginning of a Chinese-like capital area and represents the original form of the Koryo period capital area.
