Abstract

The life of Wang Tao who occupies a unique position in the history of modern Chinese thought can be divided into four phases : 1. Suzhou (1828-49) 2. First Shanghai period (1850-62) 3. Exile in Hongkong (1862-84) 4. Second Shanghai period (1884-97). While in exile in Hongkong, the launch of the Xunhuanribao gained a tremendous meaning for Wang Tao's life. Wang Tao published numerous articles in the Xunhuanribao propagating self-strengthening on the interior, and standing a nationalistic position on the exterior, analyzing and criticizing international affairs. Although research on Wang Tao consists of many books or articles, there is no scholar who examined his articles in the Xunhuanribao on the whole. The structural relation of the changes and developments in his view on the West and Asia have not yet been fully understood. For the understanding of the specific characteristics of his world-view and view on Asia, his international consciousness and nationalistic ideas, his articles in the Xunhuanribao are basic historical research material which must by no means be overlooked. Here I present an index over his articles in the Xunhuanribao as extant today.
