Abstract: | This paper is composed of two parts. In the first part, by means of analysing the Han period wooden strips (Juyan Hanjian 居延漢簡) unearthed in the Edsen-gol valley, I intend to inquire into the actual circumstances and functions of the Han period checkpoints in the Zhangye 張掖 prefecture. In the second part, based on the results obtained in the first part, attention is turned to the checkpoints located in the Dunhuang 敦煌 prefecture. More specifically, the location and role of the Yumen checkpoint 玉門關 is dealt with. The wooden strips unearthed at the Majuanwan 馬圈灣 ruins in 1979, provide the raw data necessary to ascertain the location and role of the Yumen checkpoint. Finally, the doubtful points regarding the up till now thought to be correct position and function of the Yumen checkpoint are presented and a new point of view is developed. |
