Abstract

It was the 12th year of Shunzhi 順治, 1655, more than 35 years before Qalq-a's official surrender to the Qing. when the Eight Jasaɣs were appointed for Qalq-a Mongolia, which had maintained her independent status from the Qing dynasty at that time. They were those "head beises 貝子 of Qalq-a" with whom the Qing dynasty negotiated on the problems of "Tenggis chief's revolt" of the Sonid and of the plundered livestocks from Inner Mongolia by the Qalq-a. When these problems were resolved in 1655, the Qing obliged the "nine white tributes" per year 九白年貢 as the Eight Jasaɣ's obligation and determined the quantity of bestowal from the Qing court to them. This system was maintained until the 25th year of Kangxi 康煕, 1686. However, when Qalq-a surrendered as a result of their evacuation to Inner Mongolia from Гaldan 噶爾且's invasion of Qalq-a after 1688, the Qing reorganized Qalq-a to the banner (qosiɣu 旗) system and nominated 36 Jasaɣγs as banner chiefs.
