Abstract

Shi Cuntong (1899-1970) was a main figure in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in its early period. He is known not only as a leading figure among Chinese communists in Japan during the CCP's first congress days, but also from the fact that he served as the first secretary of the Chinese Socialist Youth Party, established in May, 1922. As early as the May Fourth period, Shi took part in the Laborlearning Mutual Aid Corp in Beijing 北京工讀讃互助團. After the dissolution of this corp, Shi went to Shanghai to participate in the organization of communists initiated by Chen Duxiu 陳獨秀, Li Hanjun 李漢俊 and their faction. By June, 1920, the assembly of communists in Shanghai, including Shi himself, had been established under the name of "The Socialist Communist Party" 社會共產黨. Shortly thereafter, with the support of Dai Jitao 戴季陶, who had been instrumental in Shi's conversion to Marxism, Shi traveled to Tokyo for study. Acting in conjunction with the communists in Shanghai, in Japan Shi engaged in underground maneuvers for the communist movement in both China and Japan. These activities resulted in an order for Shi's deportation issued by the Japanese government at the end of 1921. This paper investigates Shi's activities in Shanghai and Japan using newly discovered materials, including documents from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan. On the basis of these this paper brings to light additional facts concerning the founding of the CCP.
