Abstract

This report attempts to explain the economic and political reasons that contributed to the comparatively sluggish trade in the Chosun dynasty. Iwill make clear the contradictions that the 14th century Koryo society held. Next I will discuss the policy of reformers through following three aspects : land policy, overseas trade policy and domestic trade policy. I argue that : first, the land holdings of the descendant potentates expanded in the 14th century, and it exerted pressure on national finances. Then external trade and domestic trade became one of their important economic foundations. In response to these circumstances, the reformers who supported the coup by Sung-gae-Lee, carried out the redistribution of land-ownership rights under the management of the government. Furthermore they displayed a hostile attitude towards commercial profiteering. Their way of thinking involved the obligatory management by the government in the redistribution of property and distribution of goods. Due to the reasons mentioned above, the trade in the Chosun dynasty of 15th century was enlarged through the accumulation and transfer of goods by the government. However, as a result of a reduction in goods, due to pressures on distribution in the agricultural districts, trade stagnated.
