抄録: The subject of this paper is what ethics for citizens is all about and what potential is required to mature in order to perform it. We live as members of some community and, therefore, we are creating the last edge of its history while we try to grasp what we are as its members through studying history. In this duplicate sense, we are historical. History as a narrative consists of memories of the dead. They lived as members of our community, and they are represented in history with their death invested with some power over us. Our life cannot avoid being tied by the power; we owe them our life or our community. However, we as citizens must not be entirely fettered by them but must live creatively. This tension between the past and the present means the ethics arising from memories of the dead. In order to study the above subject, this paper refers to P. Ricoeur's work, Memory, History, Forgetting. Based on his study on memory and history in this text, it tries to reveal that reading history actively or spontaneously allows us to make our ethical performance and find out how we should mature our potential for the performance.
