抄録: | In this paper, I consider the similarities as well as the differences in the use of Vietnamese, Japanese and Korean demonstratives. Based on this comparative analysis, I examine the possibilities of analyzing the function of đây-đấy(đó)-kia using either of these two features: [±D] and [±spatial].Vietnamese demonstratives have a three-term system of đây-đấy(đó)-kia. In deictic uses, đây (proximal) indicates a referent spatially close to the speaker, while kia (distal) indicates a referent far from the speaker. đấy(đó) (neither proximal nor distal) identifies a referent close or belonging to the hearer. đây or kia are determined by proximity/distance, whereas đấy(đó) itself does not possess a spatial distinction. Meanwhile, đấy(đó) has a typical memorative use to identify a non-present referent recalled from the speaker's memories. kia can also be used in memorative uses; however, as with its deictic usage, kia can only indicate a referent which is perceived to be psychologically distant from the speaker. |
