Japanese American Shadows in the Trans-national Construction(s) of Atomic Memory

Abstract

The closing of World War II provoked new questions regarding ethnic belonging and identity for Japanese Americans. In this article, ruptures around race, ownership and geography in the politics of remembering the atomic bomb are explored through a description of the specific narratives constructed by Japan and the US, and 1945 Nikkei reactions to the Atomic bombing. Through this examination, the role of discourse in the formation of private and public memory is clarified, as is the relationship between local, national, and trans-national memory.
