Many critics have agreed that The Picture of Dorian Gray can be categorized as one of the most well-made gothic novels in the history of English literature, but they have shown almost no interest in the other features of this work. Wilde's only novel is made of literary patchworks ; aside from its grotesque settings and developments, it contains elements of various genres such as Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, to name but a few. Also described are many dramatic events and decisions leading its characters to their doom. However, the author doesn't seem to be interested in developing them any further, so that readers couldn't focus theft attention on any theme or character. How should we take this apparent incoherence? The best account for this disorder can be round in "the preface". This essay is an attempt to contribute to a better understanding of Wilde's way of creation by demonstrating the dynamic relation of the "preface" to the rest of this novel.
