Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to reconstruct the social and political condition of Indonesia after the World War II through the examination of life history of five Chinese Indonesians who migrated to the Netherlands. While the Netherlands today is known as a country of immigrants where approximately 22 percent of the entire population are immigrants or their descendants, Chinese Indonesians and their descendants are very small minority among different immigrant groups. However, due to the relatively long history of immigration of Chinese Indonesians since the beginning of the 20th century as well as the unique political position of them in Indonesia, the review of individual lives of Chinese Indonesian migrants bring insights to the decolonization process and the Cold War period in Indonesia.
