Katherine Anne Porter's "Pale Horse, Pale Rider" (1939) was generally considered to be her autobiographical short novel. However, despite the many apparent similarities that Porter shares with Miranda, the novel's protagonist, the multitude of metonymies and metaphors in the novel implies otherwise. Drawing elements from the Old Testament, Porter describes Miranda's object of romantic interest called Adam as the prelapsarian Adam in the uncorrupted Eden. While the flow of time of Adam's world is slow and eternal, in Miranda's world, time is limited by a hectic modern life dominated by capitalism, war and the plague. In this paper, I intend to uncover the symbolic meanings of "coffee" and "cigarette" repeatedly enjoyed by the two main characters in terms of the flow of time.ja
