Abstract

Skyes bu lung btsan is the protective deity of the four valleys of Bumthang in Central Bhutan. His name, as René de Nebesky-Wojkowitz pointed out is in fact, not a proper name but a generic term, "the nobly-born valley-btsan." However, in the specific context of Bumthang, there being only one Skyes bu lung btsan, its real name is never mentioned and Skyes bu lung tsan is used as if it is a proper name. This paper presents translation and revised critical edition of the text of a short propitiation liturgy of Skyes bu lung btsan, whose critical edition was first published by Yoshiro Imaeda in 2006. The liturgy is composed of the following eleven parts: visualization, invitation, taking of oath, offering, presentation of sacrificial cakes, praise, fulfilling, petition, fumigation offering and "golden-drink" ritual, colophon of composition, and colophon of edition. As can be seen from the composition, the text is a typical representative work of this type of literature of Tibetan Buddhism. It was written by the 15th Karma pa Zhva nag, Rang 'byung mkha' 'khyab rdo rje (1870/71-1921/22), and the blocks were curved in the early 20th century which are kept in Thar pa gling monastery up until the present. It has been reproduced with a modern procedure in India and is in wide circulation in Bumthang because of a constant popular demand for the text.
