<論説>インノケンティウス三世と第四回十字軍 : 十字軍と教皇権についての一考察

Abstract

十字軍について考える時、教皇を無視することはできない。十字軍を最初に提唱したのは教皇ウルバヌス二世であり、以後も教皇による召集が十字軍成立の第一のファクターであった。というよりむしろ、贖宥を初めとする諸特権をその参加者に約束した教皇勅書の発布により、十字軍は十字軍たり得ると言うべきであろう。しかし、十字軍に対する個々の教皇の対応は必ずしも一定ではない。本稿で取り上げるのは教皇インノケンティウス三世と第四回十字軍である。周知の如くコンスタンティノープルへ「転向」した第四回十字軍、インノケンティウスがそれを召集したのは即位半年後の一一九八年の夏であった。彼がこの時点で十字軍を召集した理由、及び彼がその召集や準備において示した異例の積極性、そして十字軍の「転向」に対する教皇の対応、それらを解明して行くのが本稿の課題である。

Innocent III summoned troops of recovering the Holy Land in the summer of 1198. He was active in the preparation. But the Crusaders deviated to Constantinople and conquered it. Innocent III didn't try to check positively but tolerated the deviation, of which he took advantage in order to achieve the union of the Churches. This essay illustrates these attitudes of the Pope, and then attempts to elucidate them by placing them in the political situation, particularly in the relation to the Holy Roman Empire; that is, as the result of the confusion in the Empire following the death of Henry VI, there was the chance of the rising of the papal authority. And in this elucidation I give attention to the connection of the Crusades with the idea of the Emperor under the Hohenstaufens.
