<論説>摂津源氏一門 : 軍事貴族の性格と展開

Abstract

本稿の課題は、清和源氏の嫡流でありながら、ほとんど包括的に論じられたことのない摂津源氏一門の実態を通時的に解明してゆくことと、それによって軍事貴族層全般に関する段階区分を行ない、各時期の性格・特質を解明することの二点である。以下、摂津源氏の主要な一族ごとにその盛衰、変遷を論じつつ、右の課題に迫ることにする。ここで取上げるのは、頼光・頼国をはじめとして、頼綱以下の多田源氏、国房以下の美濃源氏、そして仲政・頼政の一流である。彼らは十一世紀初期には軍事貴族とは言っても軍事的側面をほとんど公的には表出させない「兵家貴族」段階にあったが、同世紀半ば以後、院・摂関家等の権門と結合し、その権門内外に対する爪牙として恒常的に軍事活動を行なうに至る。こうした段階を「京武者」と呼ぶことにする。京武者の武力基盤は狭隘で、彼らは在地領主一般には敵対する立場にあったのである。やがて、平清盛・源義朝らはこうした限界を突破し、広汎な地方武士を組織し得たが、摂津源氏一門は遂に京武者を脱却することはなかった。

The propose of this article is, first, to make clear the existence and chronology of the Settsu-Genji family, and next, to establish the chronological periods involved in the formation of the military nobility, pointing out properties and characteristics of each period. In dealing with these topics some attention will be given to the weaknesses of the main Settsu-Genji families: the Toda-Genji, in line of descent from Yoritsuna, which includes Yorimitsu and Yorikuni; and the Mino-Genji, who follow from Kunifusa and the families of Nakamasa and Yorimasa. In the begining of the eleventh century these families were in the "Heika Kizoku" period. While their social status was that of military nobility, they did not often exercise their military function. However, later in the same century they linked themselves with powerful families like the In and Sekkan-ke, and regularly performed bellic tasks both for those families and otherwise. This period is called the "Kyomusha" period. Their military strength was on a precarious foundation since they were placed in opposition to the rural loads. Later, as Taira no Kiyomori and Minamoto-no-Yoshitomo succeeded in consolidating a very wide power base from the ranks of the rural loads, the Settsu-Genji never managed to go beyond the gains made during the "Kyo-musha" period.
