<論説>唐宋時代の短陌と貨幣経済の特質

Abstract

唐宋時代に普及した短陌慣行は当時の貨幣経済の特質を追求する上で興味深い素材を提供する。短陌は銅銭の不足によって発生するのではなく、銅銭経済下で商品流通が急速に発展しつつあったとき、同業組合としての性格を強めた行が貨幣を規制したことによって発生すると思われる。すなわち行は独自の貨幣を発行するのでなく、銅銭を前提とし、その計数単位陌を操作することで貨幣を規制したのである。様々な短陌の発生に対し、唐五代の王朝は足陌や公定短陌の強制で統一せんとしたが成功せず、結局宋初に多様な短陌の公認の上で財政を統一する省陌制度が成立する。社会の短陌と国家の省陌は足陌との換算方法を全く異にする。前者は短陌を進法位取り単位として、後者は比例定数として機能させる。そのため前者の短陌で計算する当時の商品価格は交換価値と比例しないのである。かかる短陌は社会的分業の非統一性を表現するものであるが、前提となる銅銭の存在に着目すれば、国家の銅銭発行の意義は社会的分業に統一性を与えることといえる。

When we study the characteristics of the money economy in the Tang and Song dynasties, we can learn interesting things by looking at the spread of the custom of duanmo at that time. Duanmo had occured not because of a lack of copper coins, but because of the control of money by hang 行, which acted like guilds during the increase in the circulation of merchandise under the copper coin economy. The hang controlled money not by the original issue of coins, but by controlling the monetary unit, mo 陌, which presupposed copper coins. The Tang and Five Dynasties tried to unify various duanmo by imposing zumo 足陌 or authorizing certain duanmo. But these attempts failed. At last, in the early Song, various private duanmo was recognized and the shengmo 省陌 system was instituted for the purpose of unifying the public finance. The method of converting private duanmo into zumo was different from that of converting national shengmo into zumo. The former used duanmo as a scale unit and the latter used shengmo as a proportional constant. Thus, at that time, the price of merchandise was not proportional to the exchange value. Duanmo expressed the non-unity of economic specialization. If we pay attention to copper coins which duanmo presupposed, we can understand that the national issue of copper coins is what unified economic speciali-zation.
