dc.description.abstractCharles Babbage was an English polymath in the Victorian age. In his student days at Cambridge University, he organized the Analytical Society with his colleagues J. F. W. Herschel and George Peacock. The purpose of this Society was to introduce the Continental notations to England. Babbage left an unpublished manuscript entitled "Essays on the Philosophy of Analysis". This manuscript is very important to understand English mathematical scene in his age. "Of Generalization" is the fifth essay in the manuscript. In this essay Babbage considered generalization compared with induction and analogy. And Babbage explained the means of generalization by the examples of Laplace's and Spence's treatise.en
