関西日仏学館と女性たち --九条山時代(1927-36)における女子部の活動を中心に--

Abstract

関西日仏学館は，フランス語教育と日仏文化交流の拠点として1927年に京都山科の九条山に誕生した。高等教育機関として構想されたこの施設は，女学校のフランス語教員の養成を掲げ，「女子部」を創設する。当時，男性のための高等教育機関では英語とドイツ語が主流となっており，フランスは女子部を通して，関西における本国の勢力拡大を目論んだのである。言い換えれば，これは文化・外交戦略の一環でもあった。ただし，同時に日本側が意欲ある女性のために教育機会を開こうと，このアイデアを強く後押ししたことも見逃してはならない重要な点である。本稿では，日仏両国における女性の教育機会拡大と社会進出の機運の高まりという時代背景を視野に収めながら，学館女子部の初期の活動(1927-36)を検討していく。学館のプログラムを繙いてみれば，1932年度より，女子部の授業内容が一層充実したものとなり，女学校教員の養成が本格化していることがわかる。そして，1933年度には2名の女学生が揃って文部省の女学校フランス語教員試験を突破したと記されているように，そのプログラムは確かな実績を上げていた。また，学館がフランス料理やフランス刺繍などを教える無料の土曜講習会を開くなど，館外の女性にも学ぶ場を提供していた点も興味深い。こうした学館を取り巻く女性の学びは，20世紀前半という時代に鑑みれば，先進的な試みであったと言えるだろう。これまで踏み込んで論じられることのなかった学館の女子部に光を当てた小論が，今後，関西における女子教育や文化交流を再考する一助となることを強く願っている。

In 1927, the Institut franco-japonais du Kansai opened on Mt. Kujo of Kyoto as a centre in charge of teaching French and promoting a cultural exchange between France and Japan. Designed as a higher education institution, it comprised a “womenʼs division”, which aimed to train women teachers for womenʼs schools. English and German were at the time mainly used in higher education institutions for men. In other words, France strategically established this division in order to expand its sphere of influence through womenʼs division in Kansai. The purpose of this paper is to examine the activities of this “womenʼs division” during its first years (1927-36), taking into consideration the enhancement of womenʼs education and womenʼs participation in society. This division was the result of French political strategies, but it is also important to understand that Japanese strongly backed up the idea of giving an educational opportunity to women with motivation. For example, this institution had woman students take lessons usually reserved to men and opened free Saturday lectures on French cuisine and French embroidery, etc. These were advanced attempts for the early 20th century. Studying the history of the Institute therefore leads to a deeper understanding of the acceptance of French culture in Kansai.
