Evaluating the attitudes of Japanese society towards the hydrogen economy: A comparative study of recent and past community surveys

Abstract

The Japanese government has long supported efforts to achieve a hydrogen society, but it is yet to be seen if hydrogen can achieve large-scale deployment. This study aims to analyse the current attitudes of Japanese society towards the realization of a hydrogen economy through a community survey and compare the results from a previous survey in 2015 to understanding of changing attitudes over time. The results show a gap in public understanding of hydrogen, with actual knowledge lower than self-reported. The Japanese community is divided on green vs. grey hydrogen production, with cost and environment being key factors. Public perception is mostly neutral with more positive than negative responses. However, there is a difference between public understanding of hydrogen production and utilization and the reality. Acceptance for hydrogen applications varies, with transportation receiving the most support. This study serves as basic information in establishing an operational and inclusive hydrogen economy that aligns with the collective desires and needs of all stakeholders.
