地図・地理情報と生成AI

Abstract

画像生成AI の登場は，簡単な言葉（プロンプト）によって地図を生成する可能性を開いた．本稿では，画像生成AI による地図の作成を試行したうえで，その研究利用の可能性と課題，また地図理解に与える影響を検討した．結果として，画像生成AI は世界地図などをそれらしく描くものの，都市スケールのような中～大縮尺図や，地図の細部を正確に描くことはできなかった（2023 年12 月時点）．生成されたのは，地理情報を伴わない地図の意匠である．他方で，部分的な改描はある程度の質を維持して可能であるなど，事実よりも架空・虚偽の地図を生成しやすいことが指摘された．画像生成AI は景観評価に関する研究などへの応用が期待される一方，現存または実在しない地図の生成が学術研究に悪影響をもたらすことも懸念される．この新たな技術が私たちの地理的想像力や空間認知にどう影響するのかは未知数であり，それゆえ継続的な議論が求められる．

The advent of image generative AI has introduced the possibility of generating maps from simple textual prompts. This paper explores the potential uses and challenges of employing image generative AI in research, as well as its effects on map understanding. Through experimental map creation using this AI, it was found that while the technology can plausibly produce world maps, it struggles with accurately drawing medium- to large-scale maps, such as those of city-scale or with detailed features, as of December 2023. The resulting maps resembled maps in design, yet they lacked geographic information. On the other hand, just as it is possible to partially redraw maps maintaining a certain level of quality, creating fictitious or fake maps proves easier than generating factual ones. While image generative AI is expected to be applied to research on landscape evaluation, there are concerns that the generation of non-existent or fake maps may have a negative impact on academic research. The impact of this new technology on our geographical imagination and spatial cognition remains uncertain, necessitating ongoing discussion.
