<Articles>Spatial deixis and evidentiality: The case of Xiaoshan, a dialect of the Wu language

Abstract

This article suggests that Xiaoshan has evidentials fused with existential expressions or aspectual markers: le²³ta⁴⁴, le²³toŋ⁴⁴ and le²³hã⁴⁴. The evidential meaning of these forms arises from spatial deixis concerning the speaker's and hearer's perceptual fields. le²³ta⁴⁴ is a form expressing the eventuality described inside the speaker's perceptual field and is usually interpreted as a direct evidential. Both le²³toŋ⁴⁴ and le²³hã⁴⁴ express the eventuality described outside the speaker's perceptual field, giving rise to an interpretation of indirect evidence, but le²³hã⁴⁴ has other limits on its usage: the speaker cannot be at the place where the eventuality takes place, and the eventuality is outside the hearer's perceptual field. Though the evidential system in Xiaoshan is secondary, it is typologically similar to other typical evidential systems in many ways.

本稿では、蕭山方言には存在表現やアスペクト形式と融合した証拠性標示（le²³ta⁴⁴, le²³toŋ⁴⁴, le²³hã⁴⁴）があることを示唆する。これらの形式の証拠性の意味は、話し手と聞き手の知覚領域に関わる空間指示から生じたものである。le²³ta⁴⁴は、話し手の知覚領域の内部にある物事を表す形式で、通常、直接証拠と解釈される。le²³toŋ⁴⁴とle²³hã⁴⁴はどちらも話し手の知覚領域の外にある物事を表し、間接証拠と解釈される。一方、le²³hã⁴⁴には使用上他の制限もあり、話し手が物事のある場所にいないことと、物事が聞き手の知覚領域の外にあることが求められる。蕭山方言の証拠性システムは二次的なものではあるが、類型的に他の言語にある典型的な証拠性システムと類似点が多い。
