Abstract

The purpose of this research note is to examine the possibilities of using the generative Al, represented by ChatGPT, in special activities, which have not received much attention so far, while the dramatic evolution of generative Al, represented by ChatGPT, has led to a search for ways to use it in school education. Based on the content indicated in the guidelines by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2023, and the aims of special activities indicated in the Courses of Study, it is conceivable that the use of generative AI will be effective in situations where various ideas are generated in discussion activities, or when discussions to consider methods of problem solving become stagnant, or when opinions from more diverse viewpoints are required. Based on this, in the latter part of the study, we examined specific ways to utilize ChatGPT based on two subjects presented in a document published by the National Institute for Educational Policy Research (NIER). In conclusion, if ChatGPT can appropriately assume the support role that has been played by teachers in the past, it is possible that students' independent activities will be promoted. Building human relationship among students is important in special activities, and this should not be undermined by generative AI. What is important is to use generative AI as a means of supporting the essential nature of classroom activities, in which students work independently and practically to solve problems, in order to improve the quality of these activities.
