Abstract

Incontinence of urine and stool is a common problem of many elders. Incontinence is often considered of the normal aging process and is therefore accepted without treatment. Prolonged hospitalizations are common when incontinence is left untreated. It may be a primary tha reason caregivers decide to place elders in long-term care facilities. The anatomical structures of lower urinary tract and involved with normal defecation are described. Types of urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence, treatment of incontinence, environmental adaptations that can improve continence are discussed.
