Abstract

With the objective of being applied in an earthquake response analysis, the author discussesthe relation between the horizontal restoring force and the displacement for rectangular portalframes which are subjected to large vertical loads. The in~~bility effect~ df dead loads jA a tallbuilding is emphasized. A brief review, on the Thast *orl~ made in. th4 domestic. And~ foreigncountries, is followed by an introduction of experimental ~tudies perfbr4sed by the' ~u4ser andthis collaborators. The experiment covers portal frames of single span, one, two, three, andfive stories, with and without bracings, and with recl~gular and w~de flange 'sectkyss. It alsoincludes cruciform frames which are typical of an inner portion in a large frame with many baysand stories. The final discussion is made on the points that remain to be clarified in the futureInvestigation.
