Abstract

The author tries to make clear the nature of the jahbadh system, which has been little explored because of its complicated character. The term jahbadh is a derivative from the Persian kihbad, and seems to have appeared about the tenth century. The jahbadh was a kind of licensed financial agent whose business was to collect taxes, remit government funds, loan to the caliphate, etc. and in return he was granted some privileges. This system came into existence as a result of confused local currency and different purities of precious metals, developing into a politico-financial organization with the progress of the deterioration of the financial system.
