Abstract: In this essay, I document my experiences in Bhutan in March, 2012. First, I discuss some background information on the underpinnings of Bhutanese happiness. I felt that the Bhutanese have less pressure to work hard or to pursue more than what they have now, pressures that tend to decrease happiness in other countries. In addition, the Bhutanese government has a policy which pays more attention to GNH (Gross National Happiness) than GNP (Gross National Product), and this policy sustains Bhutanese happiness. Furthermore, the low population density enables people to live by themselves, which increases their happiness. Secondly, I discuss how to introduce such Bhutanese systems or values into Japan. Japan can learn a lot from Bhutan. Since Japan is different from Bhutan, I argue that Japan should selectively introduce Bhutanese systems or values, or should introduce them in a way that fits Japanese society and culture. Finally, I write about the future of Bhutan. Bhutan has not only light sides but also dark sides. Rapid urbanization and globalization might make it difficult to preserve traditional Bhutanese culture. Therefore, we should keep track how Bhutan will be in future.
