アメリカの作文教育における創造性の史的展開 --19世紀末から20世紀初頭の議論に焦点を合わせて--

Abstract

本稿では19世紀末から20世紀初頭のアメリカにおける創造的な作文教育について検討する。創造的表現に関する先行研究では、創造的表現の目的・目標と創造性の持ち主の範囲という論点が析出されているが、当時の作文教育にどのような立場があって、それらがどのように関係していて、それぞれの立場において論じられている「創造性」が何を指しているのかについては論じられていない。そこで、本稿では創造的な作文教育の系譜を整理し、作文教育における「創造性」の内実を明らかにすることを目指す。まず伝統的な作文教育における教養と創造性の関係性について、次に社会的効率主義の作文教育における効率性と創造性の関係性について、最後に表現主義における自己表現と創造性の関係性について検討した。以上の検討から、(1)創造的表現を目指す3つの作文教育の系譜と(2)三者それぞれにおける「創造性」の内実が明らかになった。

This paper considers composition pedagogies of creative expression in America from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Previous studies of this topic addressed two issues, i.e., the educational goals and objectives of creative expression, and who has creativity. However, previous studies did not deal with the categorization of composition theories, the relationships between these theories, and the ways in which each thought of "creativity" in writing instruction. Therefore, this paper categorizes the composition theories of creative expression, to link them together, and to clarify the substance of creativity in each of them. First, the traditional composition theory was reviewed from the perspective of culture and creativity. Second, the composition theory of social efficiency was examined from the perspective of efficiency and creativity. Finally, the expressionist/expressive theory was considered from the perspective of self-expression and creativity. This study identified: (1) the relationships between three composition theories of creative expression; and (2) the substance of "creativity" in each theory.
