抄録: The Japanese daily word "jibun" is often used in the practice of clinical psychology. This study was performed to discuss the meaning of "jibun" in the context of clinical psychology. Discussion of lexical meanings, the origin of the word, and previous studies revealed that (1) it represents vagueness about distinction between self and others, or subject and object, (2) it means a being as distribution of the great being that precedes ourselves (3) it means a being that is always in an interpersonal relationship. Furthermore, while presupposing these meanings, (4) it means a being that has individuality and is independent of the group to which the person belongs. Next, "jibun" is compared with the Western clinical psychological concepts, "ego, " "self, " and "identity." These concepts and "jibun" have much in common. On the other hand, the uniqueness of "jibun" is that it is preceded by the being transcending individuality, while the Western conceptions presuppose individuality.
